In addition to detoxifying, juice fasting offers all kinds of other advantages. Many use a juice fast for religious purposes, while others might undertake it just to slim down. Juice fasting may also help one to break bad habits, such as smoking, over eating, or even being addicted to caffeine. This perfectly describes me. I was a two-pack-a-day smoker for nearly thirty years and could not go through the day without constantly drinking coffee – usually ten to twelve cups daily. Juice fasting can also be deployed as an an alternative treatment for a variety of ailments including cancer.

A Detoxification diet can range in the quantity of time it is practiced. There are many who fast for three-to-seven days several times per year. I personally juice fast constantly… at the very least once per week. The reason is that, due to many years of poor eating, I developed a liver condition that requires me to keep my body clean. Last year I actually did a 100-day juice fast. After a few weeks it just becomes second nature, carrying the juice jugs in my car wherever I went. It was amazing.

But that is not to say that you also need to fast for a hundred days. Juice fasting for 100 days is something that I always wanted to do, and I have been fasting for many years. If you are new, you need not break any records I always say.

Start slow with a one-day juice fast, then on to two and three days. Do this for a while until you get used to dealing with hunger and other fasting detox symptoms. THEN you can start doing longer juice fasts of seven days and beyond. But you don’t even have to do that. Frequent juice fasting of one to two days are usually sufficient for most people, unless you have a lot of weight to lose or are doing it for specific health reasons.

Most do not contain fibers, so it is sometimes essential to stimulate certain organs and assist in the detox/cleansing processe. Certain fasters use enemas to expedite the process, while others consume an herbal or crystal salt laxative to aid with elimination. I personally use a herbal laxative called Herbs & Prunes. It is cheap and very effective. Take two of those and you’ll see some pretty massive bowel movements, legendary even. :-)

Another way to stimulate the colon and foster the elimination of built-up fecal matter is to add some psyllium husks to the juice. What psyllium does is that it creates an “abbrasive” bulk of fiber in your stomach that, in essence, serves to “scrub” the intestines and loosen stubborn debris adhered to the inner walls. This is the hardest debris to eliminate yet it is crucial to do so. If you are going to go through the effort and sacrifice of fasting, you might as well make sure that all of that filth is wiped out from your body so that it cannot continue to pollute your blood and organs.

Start out with a teaspoon of psyllium once a day with your glass of juice. If you do not move your bowels, move on to two teaspoons the next day. Do not exceed two tablespoons daily. If you STILL cannot go after this, then I recommend that you visit your doctor immediately. You could possibly have another type of more-serious obstruction. Seriously, don’t procrastinate…. get checked out right away.

There is a vast selection of fruits and veggies to choose from to prepare the juice. But not all will work well together and some of them like bananas simply cannot be juiced. Certain greens work great in a juicer, for example parsley, kale, and spinach.

Broccoli and cabbage also work very nicely, and can give the juice a very distinct flavor. Some root vegetables, such as sweet potatoes and carrots also work amazingly-well in a juice fast. Grapes, apples, and citrus offer an abundance of juice and taste absolutely deliciouis. Spearmint, pepper mint, ginger, and green onion are a few of the natural herbs which taste very well in juice, along with wheatgrass, fennel, and even basil.

How should we proceed with a juice fast?

To begin with, you have to know that fasting can be safe. Many do not realize that the human body can actually make it without eating for as long as 70 days or more, depending on your weight and fat percentage. The body actually  has stores of vital nutrients in the liver and bone marrow. While fasting, it has the ability to tap into these resources to ensure your survival in every way possible. A lot of people do not know this and are therefore misinformed about fasting.

I recall vividly one gentleman staring at me shaken and wild-eyed: “Fasting… you mean not eating? You will die!!!” Here he was, with an enormous potbelly that hung almost down to his knees, ,but it was ME who was in danger of dying. Ugghh!

Perhaps you, too, have had some encounters with unbelieving loved ones and/or acquaintances. Let the results speak for themselves is what I always suggest. But, if you are new, the best thing you can do is to start slow and give yourself plenty of time to get used to the fasting process, particularly hunger pangs, detox symptoms and the emotional ups and downs.

Once you have successfully completed various one, two and three-day juice fasts, you can then venture and complete seven days. Do seven days every other week, for example. This is a very powerful form of intermittent fasting. Continue to move forward and then – eventually – give yourself the goal of doing three straight weeks of juice fasting.

A juice fast 21 to 30 days in length will likely have a profound impact on your mind, body and spirit. It could definitely change the entire course of your life. If you are able to handle 21 days, then you can probably make it to 30 days with relative ease. Everyone should have the awesome experience of completing thirty days of juice or . There is just nothing like it. Many go beyond thirty days. Last year I completed 100 days of juice fasting.

But this is really not necessary in most cases. I personally did it because of a lingering liver condition that requires me to cleanse regularly. I always had the goal of juicing for 100 days… so that was my personal goal. If you are more than 100 pounds overweight, you should not force yourself into a long fast is you have never done one before. I mean, everyone has their mission in life.

When I got sick and tired of living in obesity, depression and isolation, I launched a 40-day water fast within days. But that was me. If you feel that fasting is the way through which you want to lose all of your excess weight, then give yourself plenty of “trial and error” time. If you initially start with your sights on doing 14 days and then fall off on day five, don’t berate yourself or think it was a failure. Simply get up and try, try again. It may take a few tries before you settle into your fasting grove. Just keep getting up and do not ever give up.

Likewise, prior to beginning a juice fast, you must recognize that it likely won’t be a “piece of cake.” You might have moments of turmoil when you will have a very strong urge to quit due to hunger pangs, detox symptoms and/or emotional attacks. You may just say “screw it,” and start driving to the market to buy the biggest cake you can get your hands on! I have been there so many times it isn’t funny.

When all of these trials emerge (and they certainly will), realize that the symptoms will pass. Realize that, even though it may seem that time is crawling, this fast is a very small window of time in the grand scheme of things. And realize that, no matter how much discomfort you face initially, it will be NOTHING in comparison to the HUGE benefits that you will gain mentally, spiritually and physically.

If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired with your weight and health, you definitely should try a juice fast. You will not regret it. The Elixir of Life May Lie in Calorie Restriction

Science has known for some time that a will tend to add years to the life span. Laboratory research conducted with mice and dogs dating back to the 1930′s demonstrated life extension by as much as 40%. While scientists knew this to be true based on empirical research, exactly why a has this surprising effect remained a mystery.

Now science has identified a gene that appears to play a critical role in the link between calorie restriction and longevity. In a study run by the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, researchers have found that a gene identified in C. elegans roundworms, pha-4, may be a key link when it comes to understanding the mechanics of life extension. According to Andrew Dillin, an associate professor at Salk Institute, this discovery has important scientific implications … “we finally have genetic evidence to unravel the underlying molecular program required for increased longevity in response to calorie restriction.”

The gene in worms is associated with calorie restricted longevity. In humans three genes, part of the Foxa family, are similar to pha-4 and relate to the function of glucagon, a pancreatic hormone. The way the hormone works has important implications for this research. If you go on a fast, glucagon works essentially to increase blood sugar concentration and thus helps to maintain the balance of the body despite severe calorie restrictions.

The researchers arrived at their roundworm finding on pha-4 by a sort of knock-out process. They investigated the entire C. elegans genome and discovered 15 genes connected with DAF-16, a protein in the insulin/IGF pathway. Using a method known as RNA interference, researchers ‘knocked out’ genes one at a time to determine which of them interacted with DAF-16 in a manner that influenced the longevity of the worm. The only gene that had this effect was pha-4.

Most crucially, they also found that by increasing the pha-4 effect, they could in fact replicate what happens on a calorie restricted diet. This finding is so important that Dillin refers to pha-4 as “the cornerstone for defining the actual molecular pathways that respond to reduced food intake.”

Although the link in humans between calorie restriction and life extension has yet to be conclusively established, all the signs suggest that it is highly probable. One of the difficulties of course is that few people are prepared to survive on a restricted diet best suited to other-worldly ascetic types who don’t have to work 9 to 5, and deal with all of the associated stress. Science believes it may have the answer to this challenge.

The Salk research indicates that there are probably genetic “pathways” that help to modify the body’s response to a calorie restricted diet. That being the case, it is feasible that drug regimens can be developed in the future capable of mimicking this effect. This would mean that humans could enjoy some of the benefits of calorie restrictions, without actually having to subsist on a spartan diet.

Currently the research has expanded to include primates, and according to professor Dillin this research is showing a lot of promise. Primates are tending to exhibit the same life extension response to calorie restriction that was found in other test subjects.

There is a small, but growing group of extreme dieters who believe that significantly reducing the amount of food they eat, will not only delay the aging of the body, but also prevent developing heart problems, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

This movement, called calorie restriction or some call it CR, is getting massive attention from Baby Boomers. Longevity-obsessed people in this category are continuously looking for ways to keep young and fit as long as possible.

They normally have underlying issues such as self-esteem, control problem, anxiety and depression. They also crave for weight loss and self-control.

To conclude, calorie restriction by itself has two sides. When CR is balanced it helps some people to stay young and healthy longer. But on the other hand many people get obsessed with counting calories and reducing the food amounts that end up damaging their health and longevity.

Some people can develop anorexia as a consequence of CR (normally who are predisposed to it). To avoid negative side effects of CR it is important to know about how to balance what you eat, what your ideal weight and level of fitness are.

Disturbing the balance will bring on one or another negative consequence of dieting.

This can affect the subconscious mind and form mental blockages that can have a catastrophic impact on the person by becoming anorexic.

This then has the reverse effect of what CR people are trying to achieve and actually shorten their life span by 10 to 15 years. Plus these subconscious blockages can take many agonizing years to get rid of.

The calorie restricted group did not exercise, but simply cut their calories by 300-500 , and the exercise group ate their normal diet and exercised regularly. Both groups lost weight, but the calorie restricted group experienced a decrease in triiodothyronine, a thyroid hormone that slows tissue aging and metabolism. The study was published in Rejuvenation Research.

Calorie Restriction and the Raw Food Diet

Calorie Restriction Diet? OR, EAT To Be LEAN!

I have realized since starting to eat a raw food diet that there are two major camps in the raw food movement, the eat less camp and the eat enough camp.

The eat less camp believe that a will be better for your health in the long term, as the body does more cleansing and repair work when it is not busy with digestion, and they argue that the calorie model is highly inaccurate and not based on solid science.

The eat enough camp believe that you will struggle to be successful on a raw diet unless you ENSURE that you are eating enough calories, and say that even IF the calorie model is inaccurate, it is at least something to work with so that we can objectively measure our intake.

Dr Douglas Graham, author of The 80/10/10 Diet, does not recommend a . He recommends that you eat ENOUGH on a high carbohydrate low fat diet to fulfill your caloric needs and do vigorous exercise at the same time.

When you are new to raw, and making such a major life change, it is very difficult to be successful AND try to eat a calorie restriction diet at the same time.

The ones who try to do this are far more likely to eat cooked food, to binge on fatty food, to obsess about food, and to suffer through many cravings and become more and more disordered in their eating habits.

When I first started on this path I had come from the calorie restriction diet mindset (1200 ) and so at first I did NOT eat enough in terms of calories.

I was trying to follow a raw version of a standard calorie restriction diet. When I just ate as much as I pleased I had the niggling feeling that I was overeating.

The result was that I did have several returns to cooked foods, sometimes even eating cooked foods that I had stopped eating and hadn’t eaten for quite some time BEFORE I went raw, like highly processed vegan food! Did I lose weight? Heck no! I gained some!

A One-Way Street!

When you begin to eat a very clean diet your body becomes MORE sensitive, it becomes LESS forgiving. You suffer more when you go off your path than if you had never begun on your path in the first place. In that way it is a one way street. Fruits are extremely satiating, as well as not being calorie dense enough for this to happen.

It is certainly possible to carry a few extra pounds of fat, and not every raw foodist you meet is going to be in fitness model shape. It totally depends on your individual goals. If a super lean fitness model body is something that you want, and you have excess fat that is not budging, then counting calories is key so that you can get acquainted with what amounts you should be eating.

However, it is best to create the caloric deficit required to begin losing fat at a sensible rate, by vigorous daily exercise, rather than by restricting your intake to unhealthy levels.

Calorie Restricted Diets May Be Best Bet to Stop Disease and Halt Aging

Adults, especially young people, have yet another reason for cutting the calories you take in per day. If the monkeys from some very positive research appearing in Science are any guide, by following calorie restricted diets you’ll live longer, look younger and stay disease free.

Monkeys, as close as you can get genetically to people, fed a calorie-restricted diet live longer, have fewer signs of aging and less disease – conditions like cardiovascular disease, brain atrophy and even cancer – according to some new fascinating research.

During the twenty-year study, University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers found 50% of the monkeys allowed to eat as they wished were still alive, while 80% of monkeys who ate the same foods but with a third less calories have survived.

Other experts believe the long life span of monkeys (about 40 years) means conclusions on longevity and diet can’t yet be drawn and we need to wait a bit to be sure.

“This is the largest and most highly controlled study showing the beneficial effects of calorie restriction on disease and survival in a primate species,” says study author Ricki J. Colman, PhD, of the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center.

“We believe that what works in primates will work in humans because primates are so closely related to humans. This has allowed us to understand the mechanisms of the .”

The pioneering but long term study began in 1989 with 30 rhesus macaques and was intended to look at the health effects of a calorie-restricted diet.

Earlier work from 1935 had shown that mice fed a lived up to 40% longer – the team wanted to see if the same could be true for primates.

In 1994 the research was expanded with the addition of 46 additional animals. All the subjects were adults when they were enrolled, and of the original 76 in the study, 37% of the control monkeys lost their lives to age-related causes – 13% of the animal’s fed a restricted calorie diet died of similar consequences.

The incidence of cancerous tumors and in the monkeys who ate restricted calorie diets was half that of the animals allowed to eat what they liked.

Incidentally, the oldest monkey still in the study is control subject Owen, who is 29, two years older than the average life span of 27 years in captivity.

One of the more remarkable findings of the research came in the case of diabetes (or pre-diabetes).

This condition was found in 42% of the control monkeys who ate as they liked and none of the monkeys on the restricted calorie diet.

“So far, we’ve seen the complete prevention of diabetes,” points out Richard Weindruch, PhD, a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health and another author of the study.

And when it comes to brain health, the animals who ate a calorie-restricted diet were better off here too, according to Sterling Johnson, a neuroscientist and another of the researchers.

The study found that the areas of the brain that are tied to short-term memory and problem solving are better preserved in these subjects.

These same brain results have been seen on other studies on animals like fish, mice, worms, rodents and spiders. All the experts can say for sure right now is that there are differences in areas of the brain that might be related to what a subject ate.

A rather limited number of these same types of studies have been tried on humans, and have yielded fewer signs of cardiovascular aging according to experts.

More work needs to be done, and researchers who study aging are divided on what stock to put in this work, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a sound case for following calorie restricted diets to keep your body healthy and fit today and also as you age.

Calorie control is not about just losing weight anymore. A relatively new trend known as calorie restriction is in the news more frequently. It is a regimen that involves reducing the amount of food you eat to reduce the number of calories you take in over a period of time.

It is a long term regimen involving scaling back on the amount you eat by up to 25 percent fewer calories than your body needs to stay at its normal weight. And this is done in an effort to slow the and live a longer, healthier life

The notion that limiting the amount of calories you took in will increase your lifespan started back in the 1930s. More research was completed in the 1960s but the most extensive research was carried out for 2 years, inside Biosphere 2. Biosphere 2 was a giant, sealed greenhouse in Arizona where 2 physicians and seven others lived for two years inside this hermetically enclosed structure. They farmed for a living. They could not grow enough plant food to support a standard diet, but despite having less to eat, their diet was rich in vegetables and there was no junk or processed food.

The results were that their cholesterol and blood pressure numbers improved and these are two biomarkers for aging.

There were other smaller experiments but the larger one took place in 1989 when some researchers were working with monkeys. Half of the monkeys were allowed to eat whatever they wanted and the other half were given a nutrient-rich diet but 30 percent fewer calories.

After 20 years, 80 percent of the calorie restricted monkeys had survived compared to only 50 percent of the monkeys in the control group. They also reported that the monkeys who ate less were also three times less likely to die from age-related diseases including cancer and .

The premise was that if calorie restriction worked on monkeys it would probably also work on people. Most of the studies were done with mice and rats although there were two small studies in 2006 that were carried out on people. The finding was that those on calorie-restricted diets had better heart function and lower levels of inflammation than those who followed a standard American diet.

The Caloric Restriction Society or CR Society that advocates restricting calories, emphasizes the importance of preparing meals that focus on vegetables that are dense with nutrients, fruit, lean protein and healthy fat sources such as nuts and avocados. According to this group, calorie restriction is the only proven, researched back technique scientifically proven which extends lifespan and the quality of the later years. According to others, there should be concern about the negative effects of calorie restriction.

For instance, in a one year study on a calorie-restricted diet, 19 participants in a 2006 study lost about 2.2 percent of their bone density in their lower spine and hip. Granted, this was a small number for a test but even the CR Society warns that long term calorie restriction can trigger adverse effects such as loss of energy and increased sensitivity to cold.

Others believe calorie restriction could exacerbate someone who is prone to an eating disorder and they could become anorexic.

My executive summary of a calorie restriction diet is to think about the concept but moderate the action. The total daily calorie amount recommended was 1800 calories. That may work for some and not for others. My recommendation is to cut out the processed foods and the sugar and animal fat. When I was working at the hospital, in the ’90′s, we accepted dietetic interns and one of those interns was a student from Singapore, whose husband was in medical school at the same time. Their plan was to return to Singapore to open their own wellness center. I share this because it was from this couple that I was first introduced to the concept of calorie restriction (CR) for longevity. This concept appears to be taking on new interest, and with today’s obesity epidemic, I thought it would be a good topic to write about.

The purpose of this article will be to look at what exactly we would call a , why we would be interested in such a concept, what science has to say about CR, concerns to be aware of, and give suggestions to readers who are interested in considering the diet for their own health.

What is ‘calorie restricted’?

This is probably a silly question. Obviously, it’s restricting calories! But how much of a restriction? Most research considers a restriction to be a decrease of as little as 20% up to as much as 40%. To give you an example of what that would mean, if you currently ate 2,000 , cutting 20% would mean you would then eat 1600 calories, and if you were to cut it by 40%, you would eat 1200 calories. The big key to the success of such a diet, however, is to eat high quality, nutrient-dense foods. We will address this later.

What is important to keep in mind, however, is that although a natural consequence of following a CR diet is weight loss, this is NOT a weight loss diet. The purpose of a traditional CR diet is to slow aging and improve your chances for an extended, healthy life. Granted, when your weight is closer to a healthy, ideal weight, your health usually improves, also. But many people who regularly follow a CR diet lifestyle actually have weights that are between 10-25% lower than what may be considered an ‘ideal’ body weight.

Why go on a restricted diet?

The most widely promoted reason for going on a CR diet is to expand your lifespan. Not only do people follow a CR diet to live longer, but to also live healthier, since a CR diet is said to be responsible for reducing the risk of cancer, diabetes and , just to name a few. We know a CR diet does all this for animals, but does it do the same for humans? Although some people are already imposing this strict regimen upon themselves, it is really too early tell whether CR will have the same effect in humans. However, as long as they are eating an adequate, healthy diet, and don’t allow their weight to drop too low, they may not be doing themselves any harm. For some people, however, such a diet may not be a benefit. Before starting any new diet, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

Concerns of a CR diet

One concern that many researchers have is that if people choose to go on a CR diet, they eliminate the wrong foods and the few foods they do eat are nutrient-sparse, where it should be just the opposite. If you plan to experiment with this diet, now is the time to commit to eating healthy, whole foods. You may have to get to know your kitchen and how to use what’s in it!

Another concern when looking into a CR diet is the big promotion for supplement use. On many websites catering to CR followers, readers are led to believe that because their calories are restricted that they are lacking essential nutrients and the REAL key to a long, healthy life is supplements, especially their supplements, which of course are superior to any others. If you are going to follow a CR diet in order to improve your health and live longer, it just makes sense that the foods you do eat are of the highest biological quality, providing all the important nutrients and antioxidants possible.

Putting it into play

There are different ways to follow a CR diet; you can either consistently drop your calorie intake on a daily basis, or, as was done in some research studies, you can pick one or several days per week and drop the calorie level on just those days. It is felt that if you start with just picking a few days to restrict your calories, it may be easier to follow. Proponents of the diet do recommend a gradual restriction, taking one to two years to get fully into the restriction, rather than just dropping the calorie intake by 25-40%. The key benefit is to develop health effects of the restriction, not develop malnutrition! Again, this is not a diet to follow for weight loss, but to improve your health and longevity.

How many calories are you currently eating? If you don’t know, either work with a registered dietitian (RD) who can help you figure out your current intake, or find a website that will allow you to enter in all your foods for several days.

To get the most out of a CR diet, as mentioned earlier, it is important that you eat foods that are nutrient dense. This means a lot of nutrition packed into every morsel, which includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. This also includes a lot of bulk, such as a lot of salads and high fiber produce and starches, such as brown rice and whole grain breads and cereals, focusing most on low glycemic index foods.

Here are some specific tips when considering a CR diet:

· Eat a lot of vegetables, of all kinds. These foods contain the highest content of a wide variety of nutrients for their calories.

· Carefully select the right amount of protein. For a CR diet, it is recommended to stick to the RDI range of 0.6-0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. This means that if you weigh 150 pounds, your protein needs would be 41 to 55 grams of protein per day. Most people eat MUCH more than that, so calculate how much you eat so you’re more aware of where you are and where you have to go.

· Pay attention to the kind of protein you eat. This is important no matter what diet you’re on; the more plant-based proteins you can eat, the healthier your outcomes. It is important to understand how you can follow a plant-based diet and still get adequate protein. Examples of plant-based proteins include soy products, nuts, and beans. A Calorie Restriction Diet That’s Actually Liberation

If you haven’t heard of calorie restriction you’re probably bristling at the thought of it. It sounds so, well, restrictive.

But consider the alternative. Did you know how restrictive obesity can be? A November 7, 2007 Chicago Tribune article cited a study of 1.2 million women. The article opened with these words: “One of the largest medical studies ever undertaken has confirmed what many public health officials already feared: Being overweight can give you cancer.”

That makes calorie restriction sound more appealing doesn’t it?

Actually, I don’t much like the term “calorie restriction” even though that’s the formal name of this dietary approach. I much prefer my own term: “calorie liberation.” Because that’s what ultimately happens when you increase your awareness of calories – you become liberated from them.

As for the benefits, there are many:

* Reduces free radicals so your cells are stronger.

* Prevents autoimmune disease and slows down the aging of the immune system.

* Improved thyroid function.

* Reduced risk for cancer.

* Lower blood pressure.

Prior to becoming diagnosed with celiac disease I lost 40 pounds and my immune system was wearing out. After my diagnosis and going on a gluten-free I was determined to keep the weight off. I calculated how many calories I needed per day to maintain my weight and I never exceed that amount.

Rarely do I get hungry. When you eat small amounts of food throughout the day it kick starts your metabolism somehow and your body doesn’t go into famine mode and hoard fat. The best part is that when you stick to a specific budget of calories you learn how many calories are in foods and that’s half the battle.

It’s just like money. You look at the price tag before purchasing something, right? This prevents you from overspending. Using the same principle with food helps keep the fat off.

It becomes intuitive. Your body adjusts to the reduced caloric intake. It’s almost impossible for me to exceed my daily calorie budget because my body would feel so stuffed. It’s like a little hatch closes once I reach my limit.

And when you’re eating less calories you’re cooking less, using fewer resources, throwing away less packaging. You’re living light, both literally and figuratively.
