I’m a fairly healthy person and “walk my own talk” in the field of natural health, but let me tell you, I had to mentally prepare for the 40-day juice fast that my husband and I completed last summer. These are some of the things we learned from our research and by doing the fast.
General Juicing Rules:
o Drink freshly prepared juice and do not store the juice for over 24 hours. If you can’t drink it immediately, put it into a glass jar (filled to the top) and put a lid on it to prevent oxidation. Juice rapidly loses therapeutic and nutritional value during storage.
o Raw fruits and vegetables are not always compatible when eaten together. Apples are the exception. You can also mix pears with Jicama.
o Melons should be juiced by themselves. Making the entire meal melon is an option.
o Avoid using pre-bottled or sweetened juices. All the live enzymes are inactivated when they are pasteurized.
o Juices don’t stimulate acids to be released from the stomach, but orange and tomato juice are high in acids and you may want to mix these juices with other less acidic ones.
o I’ve read that cucumbers may not be good to mix with other vegetables as they are in the melon family, but it seems to work fine for us. We do limit cucumber to less than 25% of the total volume however.
o Don’t add more than 25% green juice to your vegetable juices (unless you have a barf bucket handy!)
o Juicing Greens–you might want to do this in between harder vegetables, the juice sludges at the bottom and doesn’t pour out easily if you juice them first. For example, I juice a couple of carrots, then a bunch of parsley, then cram a couple more carrots in after the parsley to get the juicer moving again.
o Dilute all fruit juice with water (one part juice to 2-4 parts water) and drink throughout the day. We’ve found that 2 cups fruit juice blended with ½ tray of ice cubes comes up to 4 cups–the perfect dilution and it’s frothy cold.
o Vegetable juices need not be diluted.
Tips for a Better Fast:
o Your pre-fast diet should include several days of higher volumes of raw fruits and vegetables. You may also want to add the “Excelsior” drink to your diet ahead of time. See recipe below this section.
o Get plenty of exercise outside is best to get that oxygen flowing.
o Sunbathe if possible–10-20 minutes of direct sun per day.
o Take hot and cold alternating showers or baths.
o Sleep with a window open so that you can get lots of clean fresh air.
o Use Enemas–A fast does not always help eliminate impacted waste materials from the colon, so plan a colon-cleansing regimen. Enemas can cleanse when taken once or twice a day. Fasting without the aid of enemas allows toxins in the colon to be reabsorbed. This can poison the body and the organs of elimination (particularly the kidneys) which become over-burdened and damaged. For complete instructions on how to take an enema, see the link in the resource box.
o Avoid negative influences. Do not listen to terrified relatives and “friends” who will warn you that you will pass out at any moment and starve to death. Stop reading all the grim reaper parts of the newspaper and turn off the news. It will be there when you complete your fast. Focus on positive, wonderful thoughts and surround yourself with uplifting music, books, and movies.
o Continue with normal activities, but minimize overly strenuous physical or mental work.
o No coffee, soft drinks, cigarettes or anything else by mouth. Your health care supervisor may prescribe some nutritional supplements depending on your case. Many clients say this is the easiest way to quit smoking.
o Do not chew gum while fasting. Avoid mints and hard candies. They promote the release of digestive enzymes and makes you really hungry. Following the fast, there is a loss of appetite for caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, sugar, and junk foods.
o Cut back on some supplements and medications. If you are over 65 you will want to take your daily vitamins (if you are on them) during the fast. You will need to discuss this with your health care team as to which medications should be continued with a fast. Usually most medications and supplements are withdrawn during a fast, but exceptions occur–especially when they have to do with the endocrine system (e.g. Insulin, thyroid, heart medications, etc.) And even though juices provide lots of nutrients, some physicians recommend use of an abbreviated list of vitamins and minerals for elderly fasters.
o If you are hypoglycemic, have someone supervise your fast. You may need to add a protein drink to your program or add some egg white powder to your juice.
o If you wear dentures, keep them in during your fast so that your gums will not shrink.
o Do take time out for naps if necessary.
Fasting dips: A fasting dip occasionally happens during fasting as toxins are loosened and cleansed from the body, cell by cell, even within deep tissue. At certain times of your fast you may experience feelings of weakness, discouragement, negativity and an overpowering urge to just want to quit (We sure did!) Little things may seem like big things and emotions, memories and hurts you have harbored from the past are trying to come out. During these times, breathe, meditate, talk to someone who has experienced fasting, pray and do an enema. Tomorrow things will look different. You will have regrouped and can continue the process until your goal is complete.

Love your idea, Kirk! I think tomato juice pasta would be both cool to look at, as well as delicious. it can be infused with whole cloves of garlic and leaves of basil while being simmered as well. I dig that, and I like the serving suggestion too.
Afaf, I think you would love doing this just as much as Jo and I would love to see you do it.
Make the leap!
I travelled last summer to Texas by vehicle and was raw 90% of th time. I dragged my blender along and kept my containers filled with raw fruits and vegetables in the cooler. I also pre-scouted out places I could get smoothies and juice. Otherwise, I would order a double size of salad (try to pick out a good buffet place) and I did bring my own dressing. You can do it…just takes a little planning.
Cheers,
Heather

Great recipe, and at 41 calories per cup of tomato juice it’s low calorie. Cooked tomatoes, as in canned juiced, are actually even healthier for you than fresh tomatoes too.

You're exactly right! Fruit juice isn't the greatest choice, mostly because it lacks the fiber of fruit. Also, since it's a liquid, we may not “count” the calories the same way we count the calories in food. However, ounce for ounce, 100% fruit juice is a better choice than sugary sodas or fruit punch type drinks–simply because it contains some vitamins and no high fructose corn syrup. Also, some fruit juices are healthier than others. Grape juice, for example, is packed with the same antioxidants as red wine. I'd suggest drinking juice sparingly, but always choosing it over soda.
Nothing better than tomato juice for breakfast!

Vegetable juice just reminds me of deception.
I am significantly UNDERweight and have been trying to gain some pounds for a long time. My diet is down right immaculate, containing all whole grains, lightly cooked veggies, raw fruits, healthy fats, healthy protiens, and NO sugar- not even natural sweeteners. I will be following this advice in the opposite way by cooking some of my foods until soft and eating more puffed grains.
I hope it works!
Tomato Juice, tomato juice EVERYWHERE
Can i cure candidiasis on this? Ive been raw/vegan for only about 4 days but i am determined to get healthy. Should i remove all sugers including fruit juice?
V8 has tomatoes & it's a vegetable juice.
I've taken some of the runners from my outdoor strawberry plants and put 5 or 6 of them in a small glass jar with just enough water to touch the crown of the plant. Then I put a plastic baggie over the jar to raise the humidity and most of them sent out roots in between 1 to 2 weeks.

Hey,
I use a deep fryer and mainly fry veggies in it. I will use it for potatoes or sweet potatoes for fries for the kids and afterwards it solidifies back to a white color. It stores on the counter at room temperature just fine for me. Once it starts to darken or not look as pure (maybe after 2 or 3 uses) I heat is up and carefully pour in back into a glass jar and let it solidify again then toss it out.
Some times the oil can be used longer than others. One night we fried zucchini after breading it in almond flour and it left the oil a mess so I did not use it again.
I hope this helps.
My friend, Eileen did send me a few suggestions that I thought I better share quickly. She thinks that “canned tuna” is not fitting for Al Dente Pasta. I want to add, that of course this dish is even more spectacular with beautifully seared or grilled fresh tuna, but I did use a pretty amazing tuna from Italy that came in a glass jar purchased at the Chelsea Market, and it was great. A person can't always get to the local fish market. But yes Eileen, in a perfect world, I will always choose fresh tuna. Thanks always.

From the consumers' perspective, “Convenience Beats Quality” seems to comply with the “Principle of Least Effort” (see link ) which, though came from the fields of information-seeking and linguistic research, may have wider applications in other form of human behavior (GK Zipf on “Human Behavior and the Principle of Least Effort”).

When the docs can't figure out what is causing the stomach issues they will categorize you with IBS. With IBS, stress can be a major trigger. Stress can be physical or emotional. It can be related to changes in eating patterns and behaviors. Lack of sleep can also contribute too. That is the thing with IBS … It Basically Sucks. My own symptoms started YEARS ago when I for the 1st time in my life decided to consciously take dieting & exercise seriously & I joined E-Diets. This was back when they 1st came out. I lost weight on the program & had changed my diet dramatically eliminating all junk food & incorporated lots more veggies & healthier foods. I was also exercising too. About a month into the diet I started having horrible pains & digestive issues. It took years to diagnose me. In my case I received a double diagnosis – both IBS & Diverticulitis. IBS came 1st but do to occasional flareups that were different from the regular IBS symptoms we tested further. BLECH not a fun test. Anyhoo maybe that is the same for you – Docs don't know what causes or brings on IBS but you started having these issues (like me) when you made a dramatic change in your diet & lifestyle patterns (exercise) coupled with the stress you have to deal with. I myself was going through a lot of stress back then too. Maybe that is the cocktail that starts it. Question is… how do you get rid of it? The only thing that works for me (and its not a forever answer but helps tremendously) is juice fasting. 1 week – 7 days…. Cleaning out the system & putting your nutrients, blood, ph etc… in better balance. When I did my 1st juice fast I lost 7lbs (not the purpose) and it was almost a year before I had another IBS flare up. I also ate much better coming off the fast & a year later… not so much. I was back to bad habits.
I've told you b4 that juice fasting isn't drinking your minute maid & V8 – its creating your own juices from fruits and veggies. (This is more for the folks reading this than you because I know you already know this) See if you can find a juicer (blenders do not work) or borrow one from someone. Start with 3 days & then reassess & try & go for 7 – then see how you are feeling at the end. Don't forget – when coming off a fast of any kind juice or not. Red meats are a no no. So are fatty fried or sugary foods. Your tummy will hate you for it if you partake too early. Trust me though, the desire wont be there because you will have purged the the chemicals that cause the cravings in the 1st place
You might be amused to hear that the WordPress email I received to tell me about this post pingback-ing mine appeared in my inbox with the title:
Carole Caplin is Persuad.
(sic)
Talking of Persauds, I don't know Carole has ever crossed paths with Dr Raj of that ilk. I rather suspect not, although I could imagine them both attending one of Cherie Blair's garden parties.
However, would it be too snide to imagine that our Carole's bonnes pensees about all things natural health-ish are likely to be, erm, heavily derivative, at least in the sense of being standard boiler-plate nutri-idiot isms?
Of course, I would be delighted to find that Carole has dreamed up some new and completely original natural health idiocies. But somehow I doubt it.
juice fasting, vitamin c megadosing, colloidal silver. chemo is a giant rip-off, i've seen what that does to people, i'd rather die.
Forget about the past. It's a fact that eating vegetable is healthier than eating meat that is filled with hormones. Even fruits and vegetables are not safe to eat anymore as it contains Oxytocin for fast growth. But still it's a healthier choice. I will choose bad from worse. I'm a bodybuilder and I use to eat few pounds of meat and 20 eggs in a day but now I'm 100% vegetarian. Go veg if you like to live longer.
i like to drink juice too but only natural. I used to make fruit/vegetable juices with my juicer…turned out pretty good.

I like some of these comments. But as a black female I have grown up in the house where my food is never bland. And where any extra lean meat can't be bought in bulk or at a low price. I don't have the money to buy extra lean meat and fresh fruits and vegetables. I buy meat and fruits and vegetables, but they are never like the one's in whole foods or any of the stores in that “white” areas. I don't know what to do about that.

First of all, I never claim to be very knowledgeable about “juice fasting”. I simply show what i do in this video. I clearly say that it’s just HOW I DO IT. There are many different ways to do a juice fast… and many different reasons for wanting to do it. I appreciate your feedback but not your rudeness.
Swine flu is really no worse than normal flu.
Even in a full-on out break, there will only be a few deaths of elderly and very young if their symptoms are not managed. If you're healthy person you have nothing to worry about at all.
In Britain, where we had 50,000+ new cases a week in early July, and expect another big wave in the winter, a third of doctors and nurses will not take tamiflu because they think the side effects of the drug are worst than the flu!
