14 Tips for A Better Juice Fast

I’m a fairly healthy person and “walk my own talk” in the field of natural health, but let me tell you, I had to mentally prepare for the 40-day juice fast that my husband and I completed last summer. These are some of the things we learned from our research and by doing the fast.

General Juicing Rules:

o Drink freshly prepared juice and do not store the juice for over 24 hours. If you can’t drink it immediately, put it into a glass jar (filled to the top) and put a lid on it to prevent oxidation. Juice rapidly loses therapeutic and nutritional value during storage.

o Raw are not always compatible when eaten together. Apples are the exception. You can also mix pears with Jicama.

o Melons should be juiced by themselves. Making the entire meal melon is an option.

o Avoid using pre-bottled or sweetened juices. All the live enzymes are inactivated when they are pasteurized.

o Juices don’t stimulate acids to be released from the stomach, but orange and tomato juice are high in acids and you may want to mix these juices with other less acidic ones.

o I’ve read that cucumbers may not be good to mix with other vegetables as they are in the melon family, but it seems to work fine for us. We do limit cucumber to less than 25% of the total volume however.

o Don’t add more than 25% green juice to your vegetable juices (unless you have a barf bucket handy!)

o Juicing Greens–you might want to do this in between harder vegetables, the juice sludges at the bottom and doesn’t pour out easily if you juice them first. For example, I juice a couple of carrots, then a bunch of parsley, then cram a couple more carrots in after the parsley to get the juicer moving again.

o Dilute all fruit juice with water (one part juice to 2-4 parts water) and drink throughout the day. We’ve found that 2 cups fruit juice blended with ½ tray of ice cubes comes up to 4 cups–the perfect dilution and it’s frothy cold.

o Vegetable juices need not be diluted.

Tips for a Better Fast:

o Your pre-fast diet should include several days of higher volumes of raw . You may also want to add the “Excelsior” drink to your diet ahead of time. See recipe below this section.

o Get plenty of exercise outside is best to get that oxygen flowing.

o Sunbathe if possible–10-20 minutes of direct sun per day.

o Take hot and cold alternating showers or baths.

o Sleep with a window open so that you can get lots of clean fresh air.

o Use Enemas–A fast does not always help eliminate impacted waste materials from the colon, so plan a colon-cleansing regimen. Enemas can cleanse when taken once or twice a day. Fasting without the aid of enemas allows toxins in the colon to be reabsorbed. This can poison the body and the organs of elimination (particularly the kidneys) which become over-burdened and damaged. For complete instructions on how to take an enema, see the link in the resource box.

o Avoid negative influences. Do not listen to terrified relatives and “friends” who will warn you that you will pass out at any moment and starve to death. Stop reading all the grim reaper parts of the newspaper and turn off the news. It will be there when you complete your fast. Focus on positive, wonderful thoughts and surround yourself with uplifting music, books, and movies.

o Continue with normal activities, but minimize overly strenuous physical or mental work.

o No coffee, soft drinks, cigarettes or anything else by mouth. Your health care supervisor may prescribe some nutritional supplements depending on your case. Many clients say this is the easiest way to quit smoking.

o Do not chew gum while fasting. Avoid mints and hard candies. They promote the release of digestive enzymes and makes you really hungry. Following the fast, there is a loss of appetite for caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, sugar, and junk foods.

o Cut back on some supplements and medications. If you are over 65 you will want to take your daily vitamins (if you are on them) during the fast. You will need to discuss this with your health care team as to which medications should be continued with a fast. Usually most medications and supplements are withdrawn during a fast, but exceptions occur–especially when they have to do with the endocrine system (e.g. Insulin, thyroid, heart medications, etc.) And even though juices provide lots of nutrients, some physicians recommend use of an abbreviated list of vitamins and minerals for elderly fasters.

o If you are hypoglycemic, have someone supervise your fast. You may need to add a protein drink to your program or add some egg white powder to your juice.

o If you wear dentures, keep them in during your fast so that your gums will not shrink.

o Do take time out for naps if necessary.

Fasting dips: A fasting dip occasionally happens during fasting as toxins are loosened and cleansed from the body, cell by cell, even within deep tissue. At certain times of your fast you may experience feelings of weakness, discouragement, negativity and an overpowering urge to just want to quit (We sure did!) Little things may seem like big things and emotions, memories and hurts you have harbored from the past are trying to come out. During these times, breathe, meditate, talk to someone who has experienced fasting, pray and do an enema. Tomorrow things will look different. You will have regrouped and can continue the process until your goal is complete.

The Fastest Way to Lose Weight is by Doing a Fast

Fasting can dramatically reduce your weight and if done correctly will be very healthy and beneficial to your body.

Unfortunately some fasts are very hard to do because when we fast we are depriving our bodies of foods, proteins and complex carbohydrates. When this happens our bodies kind of go on strike, they give us pain like withdrawal symptoms.

Once our bodies realize they do not need so much food to sustain themselves then the pain stops and they get to work at revitalizing our bodies by taking away fats, toxins, bacteria, viruses and they start to repair anything which needs repairing.

So the fastest way to lose weight is with fasting because our bodies get right down to business with getting rid of our unwanted weight. We need to do the right kind of fast though otherwise we can do more harm than good.

We do not want to starve ourselves, this would not be good, but we do want to help our bodies use most of their energy and resources for losing weight and getting rid of toxins, so with this said here are some of the best fasts we can do.

The best fasts are the types which help our bodies use the most amount of energy to do their work and at the same time do not let us starve. These types of fasts are best because we still get to eat and give our bodies’ nutrients, vitamins and minerals they need.

One of the easiest fasts is a fruit fast because fruit is 80% water and 20% meat. This allows us to feel full when we eat fruit and at the same time it lets our bodies use most of our energy for other things besides digestion.

This fruit fast is a great one to try, it is called the melon fast because most of the fruit you eat are melons. The fast consists of eating cantaloupe, watermelon, papaya and lemon and honey water.

The melon fast helps us lose weight very quickly and also helps , kidney and bladder disorders, poor complexion and stomach and intestine disorders.

Another great fast is called the yogurt fast, or lassi fast, this fast is a little more intense at first, but it works very well for losing weight. When I did the lassi fast I blended up some yogurt, water and a bunch of hot spices to help with digestion, after that fast everything I ate tasted ten times better.

One more great fast for losing weight is called the grains fast, this is where we stop eating grains for a while, letting our bodies digest everything and clean themselves out. Grains can be very hard to digest at times.

Then there is the juice fast, which is a great fast for losing weight and gaining many needed vitamins and minerals. A juice fast is an easier fast to do because all you do is drink fruit and vegetable juices.

Make sure when you do a juice or fruit fast, or any fast for that matter that you use only the highest quality foods because we want our bodies to digest everything.

The fastest way to lose weight is with fasting because our bodies do not have anything else to do except lose weight, by fasting we get our bodies to focus on burning unwanted fat and we shed those pounds fast and easily.

The best part of this fasting is that we are doing it 100% naturally with our bodies, so when we lose weight and we go back to normal eating with high quality foods, we keep our weight down, we stay thin and healthy.

Doing exercise is one of the fastest way to lose weight, but fasting is something we can do which does not involve sweating and working hard to lose pounds. A good combination would be exercise on the days you are not fasting and then no exercise when you fast.

If you did exercise while you were fasting you would lose weight too quickly and would greatly suffer. We want this weight loss to be quick but healthy for us as well and the only way to do that is to support our bodies by helping them lose weight.

Fast food seems to be the main provider of nutrition for our body these days. The amounts of fast food consumed by children below 14 have increased at tremendous rate from 1980 to 2000. The estimation is that children now consume 10% of their bodies with fast food, and that 10% of fast food contribute to their total energy intake on daily basis.

Compare this to the 2% number of fast food consumption in children in 1980. And for your information, relying on fast food alone won’t meet your body daily requirement of nutrition. The numbers of fast food restaurants have doubled in 20 years and it’s predicted to growth at more alarming rate in the coming years. The reason of this alarming growth rate is due to the bad infestation of fast food restaurants, not only in America, but also in the world.

The fast food giants now also specifically target children in their advertisement campaign too. And now we can see fast food restaurants opening up their branches at public school too. This fast food infestation is believed to be responsible in triggering the obesity and diabetes epidemic in societies. And since a lot of people rely on fast food for their daily nutrition intake its worth knowing the nutritions information that are contained in the fast food.

So let’s get to know well the fast food nutrition information that is currently becoming a part of our daily life. First of all most of the fast food use partially hydrogenated vegetable oil which contribute trans fat to our body. Trans fats are hand-made fats which are made through the injection of hydrogen on unsaturated fat, making it a trans fat. So naturally all fast food products which are made through frying contain a lot of Trans fat.

Research done by feeding monkeys on fast food which contain Trans fat resulted in an increase of the size of bellies of the monkeys. And monkeys fed on unsaturated fat foods which contain the same calories did not show the same increase of size. And the most alarming occurrences are that monkeys fed on fast food show an early sign of diabetes. These Trans fats that are found in fast food have higher probability of causing than other fats.

Let’s take a look at some of the popular fast food products.

McDonald’s Big Mac and fries

Considering the amount of fat available there, obviously the best choices for food in fast foods restaurant are the salad and the grilled meat. Be careful with the dressing; make sure you order it in separate cups so that you can control the amount of additional fat that you are going to eat.

If we control our appetite, our weight is automatically controlled and that’s exactly what fasting will teach you – How to control your appetite.

95% of people who start dieting give up and put on weight.

This is due to being unable to control appetite – Learn to control your appetite through fasting and you succeed in healthy weight control.

Let’s look how fasting can help you lose weight.

As we have said only 5% of people who go on a diet and lose weight keep the weight off for five years or more.

What happens to the other 95%? They remain fat or get fatter.

Is it that the diets don’t work? Yes and no.

The diets work, we don’t.

We lack the discipline to control our diets and eventually slip back to old habit patterns.

There was plenty of dieting in the Bible. It was called fasting.

Fasting is simply the restriction of our usual eating.

Whether a fruit fast or a water fast or a fast from meat, or beef or sweets, fasting is a restriction of our food, a diet.

People have had the same temptations and weaknesses throughout recorded history.

Food has always been one of those weaknesses and fasting is a way to overcome the weakness for food.

The benefit of fasting is not just in weight loss.

A water fast will result in an average of 1 to 2 pounds per day of weight loss. But that is not the benefit of fasting for weight loss.

“I think that will benefit me,” you may say, especially if you are overweight. But that is not the main reason for fasting.

Fasting can actually make you fatter.

The power of fasting is not in losing weight during the fast, but in gaining control of your appetite, which is the REAL problem to healthy weight control.

During a fast, the body burns its own fat.

As the body burns fat, it eliminates toxins and cleanses itself.

First, after several days, your metabolism slows down.

The body slows its metabolism approximately 20% after several days on a fast.

Medical science describes this as a survival mechanism. If the body is not getting food, then it slows down so that it needs less food.

This way, you can live much longer with no food if your body slows down.

Second, your digestive system is cleaner.

The villi in the intestines are cleaner, the stomach lining is cleaner, and the colon is cleaner.

If the lungs are clogged, the intestines coated with filth, the colon stopped up, the blood thick and sluggish, fat surrounding the heart and in the arteries, the body is running inefficiently.

A fast simply cleans up the body.

When you combine those two elements, a cleaner more efficient body with a slower metabolism, you need less food for the same level of activity.

Food is absorbed and utilized better in a clean digestive system.

Fasting will allow you to gain control of your appetite and you will gain the power of self-control after you have completed a long fast.

You may not get the self-control that you seek on your first fast.

But, do you master anything else on your first try?

Fasting on a periodic basis allows a person to gradually gain control over their appetite and this is the key to healthy weight control.

You will find that you are not hungry when you end your fast (after three days, hunger usually abates).

You are as not hungry and have control over what you eat and that is the main benefit of fasting.

You will no longer comfort eat or eat for the sake of eating. Your appetite will be controlled and you will eat less and not be hungry and gain control over your weight.

One of the most important points of a fast is to go into and out of it slowly, and properly. During a fast your body truly does enter a different regime. Your stomach and intestines don’t work like they usually do, and the last thing you want to do is to come in and/or out of such a different mode with any sort of shock.

So I like to prepare my body well in advance. Since I improve on my fast every year, I will explain my last fast in spring of 2007, which was the most effortless, and probably powerful, fast yet.

It so happened one year that I accidentally ended my fast on Easter. Since I believe in God, this seemed fitting, and perhaps a sign from God, so I made it a custom after that – to always end my fasting period on Easter.

Also, once I tried a fast session in fall, but my body really did not like it. It felt like it was getting ready for another cold winter, when it was stocking up on energy supplies, and really seemed averse to the idea of entering a fasting period. So I would recommend you do your fast during the spring. When nature generally goes through its renewing period. It is always better to follow nature, and God (who is and made nature), and to listen to one’s body.

To prepare my body for the fast, I decided to earmark the biblical 40 days for this purpose. So I subtracted 40 days from Easter, and since this turned out to be around my birthday, I indulged in one last shoondig, partied it up, and from my birthday, vowed not to pollute my body until the fast was over. This meant no meat, no alcohol, do drugs, no cigarettes. I guess sex is okay, but I found my desire for that practically disappears during every fast. I imagine my body was telling me, “Hey pal, if you can’t even find food for yourself, how do you expect to start a family?” Amazing how the body works, eh? So expect zero sex drive.

The first part of my fasting period was spent cleaning and preparing my body. Not polluting it, and letting itself clean itself in the way that it naturally does. When I started with the parasite cleanse, the instructions stated I should not have any breads or food with yeast in it. Really? Well then, might as well take the biblical example, and during these forty days, do not eat anything with yeast in it.

Over the preparation period, I would very slowly also focus on eating less. Do not gorge and pig out. In fact, the only scientific way they have managed to extend a rat’s life is by denying it of food. Excess calories kill you. So exercise this restraint even more now. Do not overeat, but perhaps have your unleavened/Lebanese bread by your side and nibble on that over the entire day. I focus on the fact that I am entering a fasting period, and actually find that my body expects it this time of year, and gradually, every day, I find I am eating less and less, without any effort. Make sure to drink lots of clean water. This will fill you up, and start the cleansing process.

Now this year I combined my fast with a parasite cleanse, because the liver cleanse suggested it. So for two weeks before I started the actual fast, I would go on a parasite cleansing program. Your body is a living organism, and within it are teaming millions of different kinds of parasites. For a proper liver cleanse, you want to clean your body as much as you can of parasites beforehand. For this I found ParaGone 1 and 2. It was amazing what horrible things my body was getting rid of at the end of the two weeks. But make sure to follow carefully the instructions of what to eat. I was nibbling almost only on unleavened bread, and produced a horrible and painful diarrhoea on day 15. So I suggest nibbling also on white yoghurt and brans as well, to produce some reasonable stool.

But by the time the parasite cleanse was coming to an end, I had already been eating very little, drinking lots of water, and my body wonderfully prepared to enter the fast.

I like to do a full eight days of water only. This seems a short enough time for me, and this time it was rather painless. But I imagine that, if this is your first or one of your first few times fasting, this may be too extreme for you. I do not believe that slowly eating less should be too painful. Your body adjusts, your stomach shrinks, and this should not be a painful process, especially if you are allowed to nibble on food all day.

But how you go about the actual fast is up to your own experimentation. Perhaps you could try one or two days of the lemon juice fast. The parasite cleanse says you should not have any fructose, or even maple syrup, so it is a hard call to make. If possible, try at least one day of water only. This will prepare your kidneys for the kidney cleanse. Try to go as many days of water only as you can. I like to go three.

Once you have survived that, you can look forward to the kidney cleanse, because it calls for a massive diet of watermelon. So pull out your handkerchief, knife and spoon, and be prepared to feast like a king on your first hearty meal. The instructions for the kidney fast says you should nibble on as much as two large watermelons all day long, while lying in a warm bath and casually urinating out your stones over the entire day. I find this rather inconvenient and difficult to accomplish, but try if you can anyway. You may have extreme diarrhea, but mostly in the form of water and some pulp gushing out through your intestines. This is okay, because it is good to flush out your intestines at least once a year. You are cleansing your body, so might as well cleanse and scrub every corner of it. Did you know that pork lines your intestinal walls, and beef tends to clog it? I’ve heard a story of an autopsy where they found the intestines so clogged that there was only a pinhole in the centre allowing anything to get through. All this caked-on junk stays on your intestinal walls, seeping toxins back into your bloodstream, and harming your body further. It is good to eat leafy vegetables and bran throughout the year, to occasionally clean out your intestines. But if you don’t do that, at least this forty days should take care of that for you. Eat lots of leafy salads and get this process moving during your preparation period. If you would like to help it along, you can try the pure intestinal flush, which is to drink about one and a half litres of sea salt water. You can make your own, if you are not by the sea or ocean, but you need to buy sea salt and not use regular iodized table salt. Bring the water to the flavour of the ocean and drink it all down in about five minutes. Then wait by the toilet, because in about ten minutes you won’t have much warning and you’ll experience Niagara Falls. Before or in between jet sessions, you can lie on your back, raise your legs, and move them around a bit. This seems to loosen up the intestines and speed up the process a bit. Be prepared to hang around the toilet for about 30 minutes or more. By the end of it you will probably only see clear liquid gushing out like through the end of a regular garden hose. This will wonderfully clean out your intestines and something you are supposed to do several times a year. (More details on the sea salt water intestinal flush on the juice fasting pages.)

Otherwise, eating lots of salad and/or bran, together with the parasite cleanse and the diarrhoea that it produces, and then the kidney and liver cleanse, seems to do a good job of cleaning out the intestines. If you are not doing the full forty days, or spent a lifetime or year of gorging out on meat, you might try this salt water intestinal cleanse in combination with the leafy salads and bran during your preparation period.

Once you are done with the kidney cleanse and your watermelon feast, the next day you are ready for your liver cleanse. And this is the piece de resistance. This for me is always the greatest pleasure of the fast, albeit rather disgusting, because I can actually see what unwanted things I’ve gotten rid out of my system.

A quick explanation first though. Most people, and doctors, think kidney stones and not liver stones. Actually, speaking of doctors, I’d rather not embark here on a long thesis of how western medicine is not preventive, but rather serves to further enrich the wealthy pharmaceutical companies, with doctors as their ambassadors, willingly prescribing you every chemical and drug, for which I’m sure they get some kickback, and almost never giving you sound preventive medical advice. I believe western medicine can be useful for performing diagnostic tests, or actual surgeries when absolutely necessary, but I generally try to stay away from them, and generally never have to visit them, because I exercise preventive medicine, and hence have no reason to. So if you consider me a quack (which I would understand) and go to your local doctor asking him for his advice on all this, do not expect to get an endorsement. Even my Chinese doctor looked at me in horror, wondering why on earth I would not want to eat. But if you look on the internet for “fasting”, you will find ample material to read on the subject. People have been doing it for thousands of years. The record is apparently 86 days, and I even saw on CNN some guy in Tibet who was sitting under a tree for two years, meditating and surviving on air only.

Anyway, I do not need these extremes, and a few days of water only cannot harm you. But you can adjust the level yourself, and experiment every year, researching it further as I do.

But for the liver stones, when they get really bad, only then do they calcify, harden, and once large enough, only then do they show up on x-ray. So don’t expect your doctor to endorse this cleanse, but if you do do it, and capture it in a caldron somehow so that you can look at it, trust me, this is all the evidence you will need.

Apparently what happens is that a piece of dead parasite or something gets lodged in your liver. Or based on the number of “stones” I release every year, plenty of dead pieces of parasites throughout your liver. Now when this piece of parasite is stuck somewhere in your liver, which itself is an important organ filtering and cleaning your body, around this piece of parasite starts to form a layer of cholesterol or something. Layer upon layer keeps adding to this, until you develop these “stones”. You are supposed to perform a liver cleanse at least twice a year. I only do it once, but during one year I can fill up a full coffee cup of these cholesterol rocks after a good cleanse. For my last cleanse, one of the rocks I produced was larger than my thumbnail. It was probably lodged in one of my bile ducts exiting from the liver, with all the rocks combined (most were about the size of a pea towards an oat grain) clogging up the efficiency of this very important filtering organ. When you cut one of these rocks in half, it is pure cholesterol, has the consistency of denser cheese, sort of rubbery, olive green on the outside, and dark green on the inside. Horrible little things I’m quite glad to get rid of, and imagine my liver will run so much smoother at cleaning out and filtering my body, and keeping healthy cholesterol levels.

But before this liver cleanse, the instructions also recommend getting your teeth cleaned properly. The human mouth is a bastion of bacteria and a good bite into your flesh can potentially lead to death. Or at least brush your teeth and tongue well, several time a day, during and after the liver cleanse. The bacterial haven in your mouth apparently goes down into your stomach and can be a harmful shock on your freshly cleaned liver.

With the liver cleanse, and the epson salts and grapefruit juice, expect the regular streaming “diarrhoea” (basically just sweet smelling grapefruit juice) and a further healthy cleaning of your intestines. [For the daring few who would like to view a repulsive picture of the product of my liver cleanse, check out my super diarrhea and hemorrhoids page. But this was an extreme situation which I will not repeat again.]

So, if you are doing the extreme like me, this would be day five of your fast. Can’t imagine much energy in watermelons and grapefruits.

During my fast, I also like to eat the occasional lemon. Lemon is supposed to be a good cleanser, and offers you a nice snacky break during your day. I just eat the whole thing, imagining that the pulp will only help flush out the intestines. But the acidity of it tends to weaken the teeth and make brushing them more painful.

So now we are on day six of the fast, and you can try one last cleanse which I have not tried yet, but which I’d like to next time. And that is the crazy Russian doctor’s bay leaf joint cleansing. I couldn’t find information to support it on the internet, but that does not mean it does not work. Might as well try, eh? Can’t imagine it hurting you. But apparently you get a whole bag, perhaps looking like a fist, of bay leaves and make some super duper strong tea, sipping on that the entire day. You will apparently feel a bit of pain throughout all your flesh, but apparently it dislodges salt crystals which accumulate in your joints. Which can eventually lead to joint problems when you get older. So I definitely plan to try this one year as well, since I’ve also had general joint problems throughout my life.

And the next few days I spend slowly coming out of my fast. I might continue to nibble on the lemon, or maybe just start eating whole grapefruits, but when you actually want to get out of the fast, the instructions state that you should start with orange juice. I’m lazy about getting juice squirted all over my hands, so I go right ahead and just eat the whole oranges. It apparently prepares your stomach with necessary acids in preparation of real food. Already I am in heaven eating the oranges. And because my stomach has shrunk so much, I find that about 5 or 8 a day fills me up plenty. I feel satisfied, and that I am already in eating heaven. You are supposed to have squeezed orange juice for two days, but that assumes a lemon juice fast diet of 30 or more days. So if you are doing a shorter water only fast like me, I would assume that one single day of that would be plenty. The next day I then have a leafy salad. Make sure to always use olive oil for dressing, as it is also cleansing, is healthy, unclogs your arteries, and is a good anti-oxidant. I like to mix that with vinegar, mustard and spices, so I make a tasty dressing and absolutely relish the flavours of my first juicy meal. Trust me, the oranges can get really old really quickly, and after a day of that I’m looking forward to a real meal and some real flavours.

After the following day of salad only, then I indulge myself in almost whatever I want, but it would be better to stay away from the heavy steaks. Generally I climb out of my fast slowly, and this time it was a full week before Easter came around. So I still stayed away from the beer, cigarettes, big meat, and waited for the feast until Easter.

The important point I learned is to climb in and out of your fast slowly. There are stories of Holocaust victims saved at the end of war whose stomachs exploded and they died after gorging out on food fed to them following many years of a very meagre diet. I was not very aware of this when I first started fasting, and if you are one of the daring few and would like to know how NOT to fast, or how not to come out of a fast, you can read my ultimate burning ring of fire page.

Of course, during this time, it would be good to combine it with some spiritual cleansing as well. Meditation, not working the last seven days, but if you are not religious like me, I think you will have at least done yourself a lot of good with this healthy body cleanse. Then you can embark on the rest of the year and gorge out like you usually do, satisfied with a more productive liver and lower cholesterol levels. Or just try to eat more leafy greens and keep your body reasonably clean. Or go visit your doctor after a week for a cholesterol check. I haven’t done a before and after diagnostic test yet, but I’d be curious to see the results. Maybe you can wait a week after the liver cleanse to give it a chance to work at full efficiency before reading the levels. I’ve also seen two week liver cleansing programs in the herbal pharmacy, so you might want to launch that after your liver stone flush. Apparently the liver cleans your blood, and will improve your vision with cleaner blood flowing through your eyes, and a more efficient liver will help remove and prevent all sorts of diseases, so take your cleansing opportunity to give your body and the important cleansing liver a good thorough job.

Introduction to Fasting

Fasting, in its simplest definition, is giving up anything for a specific period of time.

Typically, we think of fasting as is in giving up food or water as in a fasting diet. In

this regard, there are basically three types of fasts: a total fast in which you give up

all food and water, a water fast, in which you give up all food and drink only water,

and a juice fast, in which you give up solid foods but drink only fresh juices.

There are different reasons for fasting as well. The three main reasons for fasting

are:

1. Weight loss. This type of fasts has the end goal of losing weight. If you take in

less calories than you burn, the end result should be weight loss. So if you give up

solid foods for let’s say a week or so, and drink only juice and water, you should be

able to lose a fair amount of weight. This is the theory behind weight-loss fasting.

Obviously, weight-loss fasting should not be attempted, or started, without first

consulting a medical professional.

2. Religion. Most religious texts including the Bible, refer to fasting and prayer.

Fasting, is a way to show obedience and faithfulness to God. When we fast, we are

sacrificing our carnal instinct to heat and drink. This is pleasing to God. Also, when

we fast, it alters our mind. This is said by some to cause a deeper relationship with

God. In the Old Testament, many times God’s chosen people were called to fasting

and prayer. There are many examples where God answered the prayers of his

people when they fasted and pray to him.

3. Health. They held fast typically involves either a water fast or a juice fast. With

this type of fast, solid foods are given out for a set period of time sometimes as

long as several weeks. The only substance allowed to enter the body would be pure

water or fresh juices. This has the healthful benefit of cleansing

the body and eliminating toxins that have built up in the intestinal tract. When water

fasting, typically distilled water is used. Never use faucet or tap water when water

fasting. Tap water contains harmful chemicals that can cause more damage when

you are fasting. This is because the only liquid entering the body is water it is

assimilated very quickly. This causes the harmful chemicals to be rapidly absorbed

as well. Distilled water contains no harmful chemicals or bacteria and in fact, can

pull harmful toxins out of the body.

Whatever the reason, fasting can be a healthy choice for your body, soul, and mind.

Whether your goal is weight-loss, health, or a deeper relationship with God, a fast

can be a beneficial activity to try. The most important thing about fasting, is to not

give up. The first couple of hours of fast are the most difficult ones. Even two to

three hours without food can seem like an eternity we are used to eating at any

time. We live in a society where food is easily and readily available. When we deprive

our bodies of this food, it can cause severe mental distress. However, the body will

adjust to your fast. Just give it time and remember that your mind is what is craving

the food. Your body can survive several days without food. Once you get past this

initial thought, your fast can be an enjoyable and healthful benefit.

Fasting- Can it Improve Your Health

What is Fasting?

The Miriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary defines fasting as to abstain from food or to eat sparingly or abstain from some foods. The practice of fasting goes back as far as we have written history. Fasting is practiced by many religions and is also practiced by many proponents of preventive medicine.

Fasting done correctly is the total elimination of food for a number of hours or days. Only water is taken in the body which allows the body to restore itself to optimal health.

You may hear people refer to “juice” fasts, where the only food taken in is juices but that is not a true fast. In fact the “Juice Fasts” should be called juice feasts as most proponents of juicing will take in nearly the same amount of calories as they would whole food during their regular nutrition schedule. No food is taken in during a true fast.

There are a significant number of people that practice “Natural Hygiene” where one of the major components is fasting done to cleanse the system of toxins and restore the body to health. Most fasting proponents will fast for short periods at least 2 times annually.

Scientists estimate that approximately 30% of your caloric intake is used in the digestion process. According to fasting experts when food is eliminated major beneficial changes take place in the body.

Once the initial stores of sugar contained in the liver are used up the body will use stored fat as fuel. The toxins that are contained in the fat are released as the fat is burned for fuel. No new toxins are being put into the body which allows the body to cleanse itself.

The fat levels are also reduced in the body and the bloodstream which will allow the blood to flow better because it will be “thinner”. Since the blood flows better and is thinner it is able to better oxygenate the body tissues. Improved oxygenation of tissues along with less energy needed to digest new food during the fast is used by the body to regenerate cells, eliminate toxins and improve cell growth.

Many people will go through what is called a “Healing Crisis” during the first day or so during a fast. During this healing crisis people report symptoms similar to the flu or a bad cold. This is the body’s way of telling you that it is getting rid of the toxins that have built up. These symptoms usually subside and get less with each subsequent fast.

Usually during a fast or just after the fast a person may notice a decrease in pain or possibly a total elimination of pain. After fasting many people say they feel better than they ever have.

A true fast where only water is used in place of food may not be suitable for everyone, especially those that eat a diet of mostly processed food. A juice fast may be best for these people. Water can cause a very strong detoxifying effect, which may be too uncomfortable for some people.

Short term fasts (1-2 days) can usually be done by the individual without any outside assistance. Longer term fasts which would be any fast longer than 3 days should only be undertaken with the advice and assistance of an experienced fasting supervisor.

Long term fasts which may last 30 days or longer are often used in the treatment of chronic disease. Long term fasts are often repeated several times with periods of healthy nutrition and exercise in between fasts. I have heard of fasts lasting as long as 300 days.

During the fast other therapies may also be use which help aid in the elimination of waste from your body. The use of exercise, colonics, sunlight, meditation, yoga stretching, tai chi, and Pilates as well as making sure the body gets plenty of rest are ways to assists the detoxification process.

Fasting has been reported to be effective in treating , headaches, allergies, arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, psychological problems, obesity, high cholesterol, lethargy, and general malaise.

Some studies in Scandanavia have shown that fasting can be effective in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Fasting done properly is a low cost and effective therapy for a wide range of health related problems. Long fasts should only be undertaken with the aid of an experienced fasting supervisor.

Fasting supervisors may be physicians or health care professionals. You will find D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy), ND (Doctor of Naturopathy), D.C (Doctor of Chiropractic) and Nutritionists among the many healthcare professionals that provide fasting supervision.

Should you decide to try fasting you should attempt to find a supervisor that has had training and experience in the administration of fasts. It is usually best to find someone who has actually been through fasting. Most proponents of fasting have indeed been through fasts and do them regularly

My First Honey Water Fast – The Wins and Woes

For six years after giving birth to two daughters, I was putting on a presumably insignificant kilo every year, until I scaled a weighty 66kg and realized that my wardrobe was changing far too fast and that standing at 1.66m with a protruding tummy was not at all flattering in any kind of outfit. Other than blaming it on my slow metabolism rate and a natural love for food, I discovered that there was surely more I could do – going on a diet. However, that was equally daunting. I was not ready to keep up with special diet plans and ensure the preparation work for making special foods for each meal. Then, one day, incidentally while browsing in the library, I stumbled upon a Chinese book with the title “Slimming with Honey” (as I would translate it in the best possible way into English) written by a Taiwanese expert in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Being a honey enthusiast, I was naturally spurred to flip the pages to ascertain its usefulness. And when I read that the author lost 2kg and improved her skin complexion significantly in just three days by going a body detoxification program with honey and water as the only source of sustenance, I immediately checked the book out of the library.

Yes, I went on my very first 3-day fast, losing 3kg as a result. My tummy was reduced, my thighs didn’t seem to rub against each other so much anymore when I walk, and I felt lighter, and could even fit into some of my old clothing. The beauty of this 3-day fast is its simplicity – no complicated diet plans to follow from Monday to Sunday, no fat-burning pills to pop, and no creams or ointment to rub on the tummy regularly. What it requires only are the available of pure honey, a resolution to fast for three days and a correct attitude when breaking fast. Knowing how nutritious honey is helps in bracing me up for the program. I was convinced that this natural sweetener containing a myriad of small doses of nutrients and vitamins and a horde of antioxidants, is a wise choice of food during a fast. But what probably also inspired me a great deal is the well-known proposition that our organs occasionally deserve a good break after working so hard non-stop since the day we were born and allowed ourselves to indulge in the immensity of so-called good foods. Moreover fasting isn’t a rocket science; for thousands of years, almost all cultures have used it to help clear the body of toxins, give our digestive organs the opportunity to rejuvenate and restore optimum function.

This Honey Water Fast Simply Involves the Following:

For 3 days, take only honey with water or tea. For each 150cc of water, mix with 1 to 2 tablespoons of pure honey. Drink this for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and whenever you feel tired or thirsty. Keep yourself hydrated the whole day but limit total consumption of honey to 150cc each day.

Day One:

The temptation for food and to break fast and start all over again was very real for me. I constantly felt hunger pangs and my mind just kept slipping into images of my favorite foods. However, reminding myself of what the book shared – “one should get used to it on the 2nd day” gave me great consolation and courage to stay on. Focusing on my work in the office nonetheless was a big challenge when every nerve and cell in me was screaming for food.

Day Two:

As per what was described in the book, I experienced more energy instead of weakness, and my bowel movement was smooth, but sort of explosive. However, what was disappointing to me was – there was no euphoria high as I continued to fast and my yearning for food did not seem to get any lesser. I somehow didn’t get used to hunger like how the book has described and all I wanted to do when I got back home from work was to sleep and forget about all the ill-feelings.

Day Three:

I was a bit surprised by my energy level in the morning and happy that I could still keep up with my usual 30-minute workout at 6.30am. And thankfully, my gastric did not give me any problems like in the past whenever I skipped meals. However, by noon, I was feeling famished again and by 5pm I was actually getting frustrated and moody about the depravity of food. And one strange phenomenon that was really not funny – I became extremely sensitive to odors and even the smell of people’s breath! To brighten up things a bit on my last day of fasting, I expanded the range of tea varieties that I use to chamomile, rose, and fruit, and also increase the floral varieties of honey to clover, leatherwood, and manuka. By evening, when I stepped unto my bathroom scale, I had already lost an unbelievable 3kg and a big bulk of my tummy.

Day Four:

To break fast, I followed the author’s advice of going on a soft diet and abstaining from meat, diary products, and oily and spicy stuff for the first two days. My breakfast consisted of a small bowl of oat cereal mixed with honey, but to my surprise, I didn’t feel excited at all when I tasted food again. In the afternoon, I was hungry and eager to go for some nice soft food but at the same time also felt somewhat revolting. Eating seemed to be a brand new experience. Flavors and textures of foods had become so different for me that I actually could not appreciate their tastes like before. My appetite was so bad that it was almost like having dreadful symptoms of morning sickness. In the end, I ended eating only a slice of fresh papaya, half a bowl of plain congee, a cup of water melon juice for the whole day, and honey water for the whole day. It was when I felt such disappointment did I realize that breaking fast is even be harder than fasting. My breaking fast experience today was far from what the book has prepared me mentally for – do not lose control and overeat, do not jar the digestive system by gorging on meat and junk food.

Day Five:

The start of the day was not as depressing as the day before. I began to respond to food more positively and continued to take plain soft food. By evening, to my relief, my appetite was back to normal and that was when I did something stupid – I took a bottle of cold lemon juice to quench my thirst. And result? I ended the day with a big mess, whining like a baby, throwing up big time and feeling weak. What a memorable anti-climax to my fasting experience!

Day Six:

I slowly normalized my diet, but still avoiding too sweet, sour and spicy, or salty foods, so that my stomach could slowly get used to having different types of foods again.

12 Things I Learnt From This 3-day Honey Water Fast:

1. Take only pure honey. Raw honey which is the most nutritious form of honey of course is the best. Use it if it’s available.

2. Make use of different honey varieties and assorted tea types to make the 3-day fast less dreadful.

3. Stay away from icy cold water, strongly caffeinated teas such as red tea, and oolong tea, alcohol and don’t smoke.

4. Do not add to your tea and honey any lemon, which can be too hard and stimulating for the stomach. Take just water, and soothing honey and tea.

5. Following an amazing theory in the hibernation diet which I had previously read, I take a glass of warm honey drink before going to bed so as to fuel the liver, speed up fat-burning metabolism, and keep blood sugar levels balanced.

6. You could modify this three-day fast to two days or one day, or even one meal to suit your needs. For instance, on occasions when you feel you have overeaten, you might wish to detoxify the body for a day by replacing all foods with just honey drinks.

7. I wouldn’t recommend this diet for young children, pregnant mothers, and people with a medical condition. If you are ill or recuperating from a sickness, postpone your fasting.

8. This detoxification program is so easy that I feel it could also be very suitable for men who are trying to lose weight but would not bother a bit to figure out how to prepare all the special meals, or have no time or energy to do so.

9. Whenever you are about to give up while fasting because you feel you could not withstand the hunger, tell yourself that it is really possible and you can make it. If others can do it, so can you. Always go back to your initial intention – what makes you want to do this. Picture yourself in the desired state of health, distract yourself with lots of things to do, and persevere.

10. Remember that fasting is not complete without proper breaking of the fast – which is just as important and can be even harder. Be mentally prepared to put up a fight when confronting food again because a slumbering digestive system is highly sensitive and needs time to get back to speed. Take fresh fruit and vegetables slowly and drink fresh fruit juices. Avoid cold and citrus stuff. Eat smaller meals, chew your food well, and eat according to hunger.

11. The longer the fast, the more time is needed for breaking the fast. Typically, a period of no less than one half the length of the fast is required for breaking the fast. A disciplined re-feeding process helps me to reinforce good dietary habits and I am now more conscious of what I eat.

12. Finally, it is erroneous thinking that you can eat all you want since you have deprived yourself for a while. We need to get this right: Fasting is not a cure for obesity or any sickness, it is a process that facilitates the body’s own healing mechanism. Rightly conducted, it is a sure, quick, safe way to unload a toxic overload. Abstinence from food, followed by rational eating, has proven very effective in helping thousands to give up bad eating habits, re-establish health and strength.

What’s So Great About Spiritual Fasting?

More and more Protestants are discovering the benefits and power of spiritual fasting. While the practice is common among members of the Roman Catholic and other ecclesiastical clergy (specifically priests, nuns and monks) until recently not so many laypeople have fasted. But that’s changing.

The Bible mentions fasting frequently. Fasting was common in Biblical times and still is for many Jews and Christians. Two specific times of fasting are Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, for the Jews; and Lent, which is practiced for 40 days before the celebration of Resurrection Sunday for the Christian. And there are many more.

In this article, I am going to center on Christian fasting, as that is my personal experience, while recognizing that many of spiritual fasts for followers of Jesus Christ are rooted in Jewish traditions (remember, Jesus was a Jew).

First of all, let me define fasting. The Hebrew word for “fast” means “cover over the mouth.” The Greek word for “fast” means “to abstain from food.” So fasting is abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose (for more information about what fasting is and is not, see links below for “The Daniel Fast is ALWAYS a Spiritual Fast”).

Additionally, there are different types of fasts, including an absolute fast (no food, no beverages), a normal fast (no food) and a partial fast (abstaining from some specific foods and beverages or abstaining from food and/or beverages during certain hours). You can learn more about the types of fasts by reading the articles referenced at the end of this article, including “Types of Fasting”.

Perhaps one of the most powerful elements of Christian spiritual fasting is that the believer is setting aside a specific period of time to give extra focus toward God. This is a time of “consecration unto the Lord.” Consecration means “dedicated for a sacred purpose.” So when a believer decides to fast, the goal is to focus more attention on God for a specific purpose.

Fasting without a purpose is like setting out for a journey without a destination. Several accounts of fasting are included in the Bible, and all were attached to a purpose. In Daniel 10, the prophet was burdened because of a dream. Daniel “ate no precious foods or meat and drank no wine” for 21 days. After this partial fast, the angel of the Lord visited Daniel and told him of things to come.

The New Testament notes other accounts of fasting, including the one where church leaders in Antioch were seeking the Lord’s guidance with prayer and fasting. Acts 13:2, 3 reads, “As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.”

When we fast and pray, we are “pressing into God.” We are increasing our focus for a specific purpose. The purpose may be a particular need for guidance, healing, financial breakthrough or the desire to draw closer to the Lord.

The discipline of fasting positions us. The believer is putting he or her body, soul and spirit on alert that they are setting aside a specific time to seek God and His wisdom. Fasting unto the Lord always points us to Jesus . . . to His desires for us . . . and to His ways.

The Bible says in James 4:8, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” When we set our hearts on desiring more of God in our lives, and position ourselves to seek Him with prayer and fasting, He says He will meet us.

This is the power and the great benefit of spiritual fasting!

Spiritual Fasting – A Strategy For Understanding

Fasting accelerates the growth of spiritual thoughts on the Lord to faith, Allah, the unity of God. It is used by all the great believers of the faith – Christianity, Islam and Hinduism. However spiritual program of fasting, food and a recipe for spiritual fasting, days and hours of fasting is different, so are their spiritual needs and objective thoughts. But the spiritual fasting is different from fasting for health.

The program of spiritual fasting is different from fasting to lose weight. Underweight and overweight people respect the same rules on spiritual fasting regime. Spiritual Fasting is not for total abstinence from food. During a spiritual fast, you eat selected foods considered pious. Traditionally, men continue fasting for spiritual food, like fruits. Sometimes, a spiritual fasting is not to eat anything but drink water. In other cases, a spiritual fast is to not eat at any given time. However, there are different levels of fasting followed by sects, religions and individuals.

For faith Christen fasting is not essential, but it is strongly recommended. The main reason for the fast Christen is quick to develop a closer walk with the Lord Jesus Christ, God Unity. By withdrawing our eyes to the power of this world, we can better focus on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Fasting and prayer are often linked. Fasting is a way to show God and selfish individual Christen is serious about the relationship with Him. Fasting is limited to a fixed time, especially when fasting is the food. To Christen, fasting is not meant to punish our flesh, but to focus on God.

The ninth month of Islamic calendar is called Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslim undertakes fasting Islam. During Ramadan, ardent Muslim to boycott all recipes and diet drinks, food, smoking and sexual contact during the day. The thinking about fasting during Ramadan appears to contribute to devote to God, praying and visiting the mosque. Fasting Islam is taken to focus respect for Allah. Muslim do not believe wrong with eating meat, if possible during the Muslim fasting.

The reflection of the Hindu faith, spiritual fasting is also committed. Some Hindu refrain from eating meat on days considered spiritual. Some other Hindu abstain from intoxication such as wine or smoking, etc. Some abstain from eating anything during the day, others before going to meditation or a sanctuary for prayer.

Fasting of the Hindu religion is taken for the sake of spiritual gains. Fasting is undertaken to create a relationship of harmony with life itself absolute, pure consciousness within. Fasting is a Hindu spiritual reflection on the food needs of its physical and spiritual health.

Hindu believes that the path of spirituality is concerned about the fate of considerations, and worldly indulgences and it disrupts the focus on spiritual realization. Therefore, a devotee should try to impose on him, should get his mind focused on the spiritual goal of liberation. And a form of restraint is fasting. Hindu believe that when the stomach is full, the intellect begins to sleep. Wisdom becomes mute. Hindu fast on certain auspicious days of the month, week and / or spiritual festivals. During the fasting period, the Hindu god calms the mind control and evil thoughts.

The ancient medical system of India said that the root cause of many diseases is the accumulation of toxic materials in the digestive system. Since the human body is composed of 77% to 23% liquid and solid, like Earth, the gravitational pull of the moon affects the fluid content of human life. It causes emotional imbalances in the body and mind, what makes some people tense, irritable and violent. Fasting acts as antidote; because it reduces the acid content in the living body which helps people maintain their mental health. Fasting still with spiritual faith helps maintain a healthy body and mind. Without a body and mind healthy, deeper concentration on Lord of the faith, Allah, the unity of God, still distracted.

Regular cleaning of toxic materials keeps one healthy. By fasting, the digestive organs are given to rest and all the mechanisms of physical and mental lives are cleaned and adjusted. A complete fast is good for health and the occasional intake of warm lemon juice during the period of fasting prevents the flatulence.

Is Fasting Safe and What Kind of Fast Should I Do

Nobody has ever died as a result of a few weeks of intentional fasting. If it makes things better in your home, call it a liquid diet. If you talk to anybody about fasting, most people will think you have totally lost it. Don’t listen to them. Get educated! Before fasting you should have a thorough understanding of all the steps involved and you should become acquainted with a practiced practitioner who knows what they are doing (and has done a fast of the duration you would like to do) that you can call to ask any questions if necessary.

After juice fasting, you should feel stronger and more revitalized, your health will improve, your physical and mental working capacity will increase and you will look younger than before you started the fast.

Fasting is the oldest therapeutic method known to man.

Fasting was used by Galen, Plato and Socrates to “attain mental and physical efficiency.” Pythagoras fasted for up to 40 days at a time. Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, prescribed fasting to his patients. And the great physician, Paracelsus, said, “Fasting is the greatest remedy.”

Swedish Fast Marches led in the 1950′s and 60′s, by Dr. Lennart Edren proved to the world the safety of fasting. Participants of these fasts marched 325 miles–that’s 33 miles/day–for ten whole days without solid food! And their health improved. As a matter of fact, participants had more energy AFTER the fast than before.

It was observed that serum albumin levels remained constant, as did blood sugar levels, even though no protein was consumed over the course of the 10-day march. Body protein is in a dynamic state of breaking down (catabolism) and building up (anabolism). When old or diseased cells decompose, the amino acids are simply recycled to build young, healthy cells.

One doctor, Otto Buchinger, Jr., has supervised over 90,000 successful fasts. Russian doctors have found that fasting is the most effective treatment for schizophrenia–64% of the patients improved mentally after 20-30 days of controlled fasting.

Edgar Cayce, the Sleeping Prophet, believed that fasting was of the mind and involved a setting aside of self in order to become a clearer channel for creative and spiritual energies. He recommended fasting for poor diet, poor assimilations, poor eliminations and incoordination between the sympathetic and cerebrospinal nervous systems, imbalances or toxins in the circulatory system, improper acid-alkaline balance, glandular malfunctions and general congestion of the body.

A 54-year old Scottish woman juice fasted for 249 days. Not only did she not harm herself, but she lost 74 pounds and got rid of her arthritic pain.

Fasting extends your life. One experiment done on rats showed that limiting them from overeating and systematically starving them increased their lifespan 2 ½ times! Proponents of fasting declare that aging is not commensurate with calendar years, but rather with the health of the cells. During fasting, the concentration of toxins removed from the body and appearing in the urine can increase ten-fold.

Fasting: A Divine Treatment For Body and Soul

Fasting is a school for the training of both the physical body and the soul, and it has numerous merits and benefits. However, just as with any other act of worship, Muslims observe the fast not for the benefits, but rather because they wish to totally submit to the will of God. Believers are aware that worldly benefits are not the goal of any kind of worship. Muslims draw closer to God by abandoning the things they enjoy, and this makes the sincerity of their devotion to God all the more evident. They know that God will be pleased with them if they abandon worldly comforts for His sake. The reason for their worship is the Divine command and its result is God’s good pleasure.

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. Concerning the fast of Ramadan, the Qur’an declares:

The month of Ramadan, is the month in which the Qur’an (began to be) sent down as a pure source of guidance for people, and, when practiced, as clear signs of guidance and the Criterion between truth and falsehood. Therefore, whoever is present during this month must fast and he who is so ill that he cannot fast or he who is on a journey must fast the same number of days on other days. God desires ease for you, and desires not hardship for you, so that you can complete the number of the days required, and exalt God because He has guided you, and it is hoped that you may give the thanks due to Him. (Baqara 2:185)

How does Hunger Accomplish What Abundance cannot?

Human beings have both carnal and spiritual sides. The physical body of a human is comparatively small, but the soul is infinite, allowing them to embrace the whole universe. Human beings are not only material objects, a creature consisting of a stomach, nor do they only have a limited, cumbersome, simple, or transient corporal body. Human nature is so universal that in themselves human beings contain some aspect of all that exists in the universe. The countless tendencies, desires, feelings, dreams, thoughts, and ideas of humanity are like an index of the universe.

God Almighty has ornamented the Earth with countless blessings and has given it to humanity, the vicegerent of God on Earth. Each day they receive lavishly prepared dining tables, one after another. Their sustenance is sent to them from the Heavens via the trees, each of which gives a different fruit in a different season of the year and the Earth nourishes them with every kind of delicious provisions.

He has granted you all that you would ask of Him. Should you attempt to count God’s blessings, you cannot calculate them. But humankind is innately inclined to extreme misjudgment and ingratitude. (Ibrahim 14:34)

Both the Earth and the skies were created to serve humanity, and the main reason why human beings exist is to worship God, making worship a fundamental aim in itself. God Almighty says in the Qur’an: I have not created the jinn and humankind but to know and worship Me alone (Dhariyat 51:56). God, the most Gracious, gave us countless favors but unfortunately, for the most part we are unaware of and thus not thankful for these bounties. We are like a fish that is in the sea but unaware of the water as a blessing.

One of the signs of a person being mature is the subjugation of the bestial characteristics of the brain and the soul. Human nature is difficult to deal with; it is sometimes excessive and sometimes regressive. Severe measures are sometimes needed to suppress the excesses. In this sense, it is very difficult to satisfy the carnal soul; the more you give the more it demands. The carnal soul continuously commands human beings to commit sins. According to a Qur’anic decree, the Prophet Joseph describes the carnal soul in the most eloquent way saying,

I free not my own self of blame, for the human soul is certainly prone to evil, except to whom my Lord has granted His Mercy. Surely my Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful (Yusuf 12:53).

Repentance after committing sins and the redemption of sins through fasting strengthen the free will of humanity and purify the soul.

God Almighty has provided humanity with the willpower to ascend from the lowest rank to a most exalted one, or vice versa. Therefore, sometimes humans can surpass the angels and become closer to God, while at other times some people are worse than any devil.

Surely We have created human of the best stature as the perfect pattern of creation; then We have reduced him to the lowest of the low. Except those who believe and do good, righteous deeds, so there is for them a reward constant and beyond measure. (Tin 95:4-6)

Since the excess of animality hinders the emergence of angelic aspects, it is necessary that human beings should try to dominate their animalistic side. When the dominance of the soul over the body weakens or when the body becomes dominant, human beings become slaves to their carnal desires. They pay no heed to the intellect or to religious admonitions and spend all their energy trying to quench their thirst and hunger for worldly delights. Their only concern is to find new ways of satisfying their carnal desires. They have to invent substances that increase the appetite, that aid digestion, or even act as stimulants. “Such people are like a donkey or an ox, even if they are at the peak of science, culture, and civilization. They will commute between the dining room and the toilet all their life and will have no time for any principles or for the eternal life. All their faculties will die, except for those pertaining to lust, food, drink, and foolish entertainment.”1 No depiction can be more precise and more elegant than that of the Qur’an:

… as for those who disbelieve, they shall enjoy this world and eat as cattle eat; and the Fire shall be their abode (Muhammad 47:12).

Fasting is the reins and bit that restrain the carnal self. It hinders human beings from becoming arrogant like pharaohs. It is reported that the Prophet said: “God inflicted certain sort of punishments upon the carnal self. First, He put the carnal self in the fire and asked: ‘Who are you, who am I?’ The carnal self said: ‘You are you, I am me.’ Then, God restrained the self with hunger and asked again: ‘Who are you, who am I?’ The final answer of the self was: ‘You are the Owner of the worlds and I am Your humble servant.’”

Fasting Helps us to Become Aware of God’s Blessings and to Appreciate Them

As for spiritual merits and therapeutic benefits that may be gained from performing the fast, these cannot be considered to be the sole results, irrespective of how satisfactory the fruits are. Since believers fast to seek the pleasure of God and to gain salvation in the Hereafter, it is clear that the fruits and benefits of the fast are in the Hereafter. Nevertheless, exploring the wisdom behind the act of fasting strengthens the faith of Muslims who are aware that whatever God commands is always good and whatever He prohibits is always bad and harmful. This helps them proceed in the awareness that God, Who is so compassionate and generous, rewards good deeds both in this world and the Hereafter.

Fasting is a school for the training of the spirit, the purification of the heart, and protection from committing sins. No matter whether one fasts only for a day or a month, the person fasting cuts themselves off from worldly comforts, including food, drink, and sexual relations, that are otherwise lawful in the ordinary course of life, at the behest of God, Who shall give a reward for it. Although everything done for the sake of God has a reward, none of the good deeds or acts of worship can be compared to fasting when it comes to God’s pleasure and reward. As reported by Abu Hurayra, God’s Messenger stated that God said, “Every act of the humanity is for themselves, except fasting. It is for Me, and I shall reward it. That is because they abstain from food, drink and carnal desires for My sake.”2

Fasting forms a private connection between the Creator and the creation, and it has deep inner aspects along with its more obvious benefits and merits. Thus, fasting has a special quality that is not found in anything else and that is its close connection to God; this is so much so that He says: “Fasting is for Me, and I shall reward it.” God has chosen fasting for Himself, and He will reward it and multiply the reward without measure.

Sincerity is very important when one observes an act of worship. Sincerity means doing something only for God’s sake. Fasting reflects this characteristic well, for it cannot be known whether a person is actually fasting or not. Only God and the person fasting can know this. Moreover, there is no need to make the fact that one is fasting known to other people.

Therefore, believers must observe fasting in complete cordiality and refrain from actions that may harm their sincerity. They should not depress or annoy others, or expect anything from them while observing the fast, as this is only for God.

People of deep perception think that, “fasting is for me,” means “I am Samad,” the One to Whom all created beings turn to for all their needs, and Who is not dependent on anything or anyone for any need. God is not in need of anything, and He does not need our fasting, either. It is an act of worship observed for God alone; fasting causes a positive change in the nature of the person fasting and brings about perfect moral values that God will reward in a way beyond the imagination of human beings. Fasting is a worship that is not evident to other people and therefore there is no ostentation. Therefore, in the second part, God says: “and I will reward it.”

The teachings of Jesus concerning this issue are stated in the Bible:

Whenever you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face; so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Lord who is in secret, and your Lord, who sees in secret, will reward you (Mathew 6:16-18).

The Bible alone has 74 references to fasting.3 The Bible mentions that the Prophets Jesus, John (the Baptist), Moses, Daniel, Elijah, and David, peace be upon them, all fasted. Prophet David fasted every other day. This fast of David is one of the most virtuous of the recommended fasts in Islam as well. Prolonged fasting was practiced by the Biblical saints, Ahab, Anna, Esther, Hannah, Ezra, and the apostles.

Fasting is not only mentioned in the Bible, both the Old and New Testament, but also in the Mahabharat of Hinduism, and in the Upanishads of India, as well as being observed among the Jains. The original significance of fasting as a form of spiritual devotion was the same among the nations and communities of such ancient civilizations as the Celts, Aztecs, Babylonians, ancient Peruvians, the Assyrians, the ancient Greeks, and the Egyptians. Namely, fasting as an institution for spiritual reasons is common to all religions and faiths.

The life accounts of all the prophets in revealed scriptures and in popular knowledge show that they were actually leading a holy way of life for a certain period of time, even before they started receiving Divine Guidance. During this period, they abstained from food, drink, and other human needs, and they enabled their souls to have communion with God and finally were rewarded with His revelation. Prophet Moses, Prophet Jesus, and Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon them all), who are guides for the purification and perfection of the soul, observed fasting during the preparation phase of their difficult missions. Prophet Moses spoke with God and received the Law after fasting for forty days:

And he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:28).

The Bible also mentions that Jesus fasted for forty days in the desert before starting his ministry. Similarly, Prophet Muhammad was called to the prophethood at the age of forty while fasting and worshipping during the month of Ramadan in the Hira cave on top of a mountain in solitude. This is another proof of the fact that fasting is an influential factor in the maturation and purification of human beings.

The Qur’an is the greatest evidence concerning the order of fasting prescribed for modern and ancient people alike:

O, you who believe! Prescribed for you is the Fast, as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may deserve God’s protection against the temptations of your carnal soul and attain piety. (Baqara 2:183)

Fasting entails abstinence not only from food, but also from all kinds of empty talk, obscene language, backbiting, slander, as well as unlawful looks, and etc. That is, a perfect fast means refraining from committing all kinds of sins along with abstaining from carnal desires. People of deep perception have said that fasting is invalidated not only by eating, drinking, or sexual intercourse, but also by malicious or evil actions, such as lying, backbiting, and slander. The following saying of the Prophet supports this idea: “Many an observer of fasting will not receive any reward from their fast but the pain of hunger …”4

In another tradition that highlights the greatness of the reward awaiting those who fast, Abu Umama reports, “I asked the Prophet to tell me a religious practice I should perform. He said: ‘Observe the fast, since this unique act of worship has no equal.’ I repeated my question and he again said: ‘Observe the fast, since it has no equal.’ I asked the same question for the third time and he answered as he did before: ‘Observe the fast, since it has no equal.”5

Fasting: The Physical Dimension

Some people claim that fasting is a harmful practice that poses medical risks. First of all, it is not true that fasting, as has been observed by Muslims, is harmful to the body.

Changing the normal habits from time to time is a form of rest for the body. Students, for example, have holydays after studying for several months continuously. Similarly, employees get a day for leisure and rest after working during the week. Is it therefore not reasonable to think that the stomach and the digestive system also require a rest?

It is a well-known fact that all animals fast instinctively when unwell. It is a highly potent natural anti-inflammatory therapy. Also, in winter most animals find very little to eat and therefore they fall into a state of hibernation, which is a kind of fasting. When they awake in spring, after their first meal they are physically renewed, more energetic, and full of strength. This demonstrates that a living organism can survive for a long time without food or water without suffering any serious harm.

The human body and in particular the digestive organs of the human body need rest. In 1975, Allan Cott in his Fasting as a Way of life noted “fasting brings a wholesome physiological rest for the digestive tract and central nervous system and normalizes the metabolism.”6

In 1994, fifty studies concerning the medical benefits of fasting were presented by both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars at the 1st International Congress on ‘Health and Ramadan’ in Casablanca, Morocco. Improvement in many medical conditions was noted. None of these studies were able to come up with any findings concerning the negative effects of fasting upon body.7

Fasting in Ramadan is voluntarily undertaken. Muslims during the Islamic fast are not subjected to a diet of selective food only, as with fruit or protein-only diets. The breakfast taken before dawn (sahur) is eaten; at sunset the fast is broken with something sweet like dates, fruits, or juices to regulate any hypoglycemia followed by a regular dinner (iftar).

In the brain the hypothalamus has a ‘lipostat’ which controls body mass. When severe and rapid weight loss is achieved by a starvation diet (not fasting in Ramadan) the center does not recognize this as normal and re-programs itself to cause a rapid weight gain after the fast. However, fasting as is prescribed by Islam is different from such diets as crash diet or starvation diet prescribed by a physician. Fasting in Ramadan does not cause malnutrition and does not deprive the body of calories. Calorie intake of people fasting in Ramadan is either in line with what is recommended or just below this.

Additional prayers are prescribed after the dinner, which helps metabolize the food. Islamic prayer called salat uses all the muscles and joints and can be placed in the category of a mild exercise in terms of caloric output. It is common to burn ten extra calories for each posture of prayer, although this is not the purpose of the prayer.

Ramadan is a month of cross-examining oneself and of restraining the carnal desires. This state of purity prevails even after Ramadan, guiding the believer to be more able to lead a life full of happiness and good deeds. In this sense, fasting for a Muslim is an exercise in self-discipline. A person who is trained through fasting, especially in the month of Ramadan, learns to resist their physical desires, not only when fasting, but also when they are not observing the fast. For those who smoke heavily, are constantly snacking, or drinking coffee every hour, it is an opportune time to break such habits and hopefully continue to be moderate after Ramadan ends.

Fasting is good for certain diseases such as stress related illnesses, Diabetes (although not advised if the patient is taking insulin), Hypertension, Migraine headaches, Chronic overweight and obesity, and Insomnia. The most important benefit of fasting is that it thoroughly cleans and purifies the bloodstream and reestablishes proper pH balance in the blood.

Fasting Sharpens Mental & Physiological Awareness

As the body cleanses and heals itself through fasting, keener mental concentration and clearer spiritual perception develop. As is known, the brain is the physical instrument of the mind. As the mucus and toxic waters are flushed from the brain, worries and frustrations leave the mind. It becomes free and clear; the creative powers expand. The memory becomes sharp and keen. Reciting the Qur’an more while fasting not only produces a tranquility of heart and mind, it also improves the memory.

Fasting has been found to be an effective treatment for psychological and emotional disorders. It helps those fasting to firm up their will, cultivate and refine their taste and manners, strengthen their conviction of doing good, and avoid controversy, petulance and rashness, all of which contribute to a sane and healthy personality.

Fasting also helps Muslims feel the peace that comes from spiritual devotion as well as kinship with fellow believers. This feeling of inner peace and tranquility has positive effects on the psychology of the believers. In a tradition the Prophet said, “Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, they should avoid food and drink, sexual relations, and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with them, they should say, ‘I am fasting.’”8 “Fasting is a shield” here has been interpreted to mean that a wall is built between a person and everything except God through the observation of the fast. The believers that make all their limbs and organs fast become more diligent and decent. They are even able to avoid those who upset them, saying, “I am fasting.” This is the recommendation of the Prophet and is the main reason for the fall-off in the amount of crimes during Ramadan.

To conclude, fasting not only purifies the mind and the spirit, but the body as well. Those who want to improve their spiritual faculties should observe the fast. In other words, those who do not fast become captives of their body and cannot renew their body and mind and excel their soul.

Fasting the Healthy Way

“Get in the car” my normally easy-going husband ordered, on the 18th day of what was intended to be a 40-day fast. My stubborn nature led to my refusal to eat unless a doctor told me I had to. My husband ordered me into the car so he could take me to the emergency room. He knew any doctor that examined me would order me to eat, and he was right.

Although I had previously completed a 40-day fast without any negative physical repercussions, this fast was not going so well. My breathing was labored, I could barely stand, my speech was slurred, and I couldn’t form thoughts well or spell even simple words. I was also fighting to maintain consciousness.

After tests were run, it was determined that I had metabolic acidosis, and I was admitted to the hospital. Metabolic acidosis is a pH imbalance in which the body has accumulated too much acid and doesn’t have enough bicarbonate to effectively neutralize the effects of the acid. It can be caused various ways, including starvation diets or improperly managed fasting. Severe metabolic acidosis that is left untreated will lead to coma and death. The doctor confirmed that I would have likely been in a coma or died within another 24 hours had I not received medical intervention.

The severity and seriousness of my symptoms was a wake up call for me. Everything I had read on fasting declared that it was perfectly safe, but my experience made it clear that fasting, when done improperly, can actually lead to death.

God taught me some things on a spiritual level through that situation, but for the purpose of this article, I’d like to focus on what I discovered as I researched the physical and medical aspects of fasting. My hope is to spare you, or perhaps someone you know, any potential negative physical consequences as you seek to follow the Lord through fasting.

Now let’s take a look at how to fast the healthy way.

BE ACCOUNTABLE

As a married woman, I had my husband to step in and put his foot down when I had gone too far and was abusing my body. Without his intervention, I probably would have died.

We can’t always see things clearly on our own, so may need a friend or loved one to step in and let us know it is time to stop. Whether you are married or single, submit to someone you can trust and give them permission to speak up if they feel you are ever fasting in an unhealthy manner. This is important for everyone, but even more so for women who may be more prone to eating disorders.

PREPARE IN ADVANCE

A big mistake many people make prior to beginning a fast is to fail to consider how their diet and lifestyle should be altered prior to the start of a fast. Oh, many alter their diet before fasting – by stuffing themselves with as much junk food as they can, with the hopes that it will make the time of fasting easier. This actually has the opposite effect, and will in fact increase your level of physical discomfort as you fast. So don’t do it!

Instead, at least a few days prior to the fast, cut out all animal products from your diet, including meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, and eggs. Also cut out fried, greasy foods, and sweets, and reduce your consumption of coffee, black tea and sodas. Then, the day before the fast begins, switch over to nothing but raw fruit and vegetables. At this point, since you’ve already reduced the consumption of coffee, tea, and sodas, it should be relatively easy to completely eliminate them from your diet. Stop consuming them altogether before beginning the actual fast.

The time of preparation prior to the fast should be considered an extension of the fast itself. The time of transition is useful for the body, but can also be used to prepare on spiritual and practical levels as well. Use it to solidify the purpose of the fast and to set into place anything that will need to be dealt with during the fast. For instance, clear your calendar as much as possible, and if applicable, prepare meals for your family or make other arrangements for their meals so meals don’t have to be cooked while you’re fasting. If you don’t skimp on the preparation time, your fast will likely go more smoothly and be more effective.

UNDERSTAND THE EFFECTS ON YOUR BODY

During fasting, the body eliminates toxins. That’s a good thing, but can cause some discomfort. The most common symptom is headaches. The good news is, if you prepared properly for the fast, discomfort, while perhaps not totally eliminated, should be minimized considerably.

To help the body eliminate toxins, drink plenty of water, but don’t overdo it. Three or four quarts of water per day is a good amount. While water helps to flush out toxins, it flushes out valuable minerals as well. In fact, significant bone demineralization begins after only two days of fasting. Fasting, along with huge amounts of water intake can result in a deficiency of calcium, potassium, and magnesium. This deficiency can cause muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, and fatigue. To counteract this, you might want to take a teaspoon of calcium and magnesium before bedtime. Some people also opt to drink sports drinks intended to replace electrolytes; it’s best to pick up some at your local health food store rather than consuming the grocery store varieties that are laden with sugar.

BREAK THE FAST PROPERLY

The way you end the fast is just as important as the preparation prior to the fast. Most Christians I know who practice corporate fasting make the following a part of their fasting ritual: before the fast even ends, people who, most likely didn’t prepare properly for the fast, start discussing which restaurant they’ll all meet at immediately after the fast ends. At the conclusion of the fast, many of them will be found gorging themselves at the local Mexican restaurant. As tempting as that might be, unless you want to pay for that dearly on a physical level, don’t do it!

Instead, try this. Reintroduce food slowly, in smaller than normal amounts. Start off with fresh fruit that has a low acidic level. The second day, in addition to fruit, add in tossed green salads, with minimal salad dressing, if any. On the third day, add in proteins such as grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. By the fourth day you should be back to eating normally, without any problem.

As you can see, counting the time needed to prepare prior to the fast, the actual fast itself, and the time slowly reintroducing food, a three-day fast should actually be a nine-day process. Although this requires discipline, and won’t be easy, your body will be much healthier if you handle it this way. Consider the days prior to and after the fast as extra practice in denying the flesh and exercising the spiritual fruit of self control.

SOME PEOPLE SHOULDN’T FAST

Even if done properly, some people shouldn’t fast, especially when it comes to water-only fasts. Here are some categories of people who should either not fast, or be particularly cautious when fasting:

1. Infants and children. There is really no reason for infants and children to fast. Due to their lack of maturity, they would likely not really understand the spiritual purpose of fasting, and their bodies need to take in ample nutrients regularly. If your children want to participate in a corporate fast, encourage them to give up something other than food. For instance, a friend of mine has a five-year-old son who decided to give up gumballs (something he really loves) during the time their church was fasting. Other children may want to give up an activity they enjoy such as playing video games or watching TV. Giving up something needs to be a choice the child makes, rather than something that is forced.

2. Pregnant or nursing women. Water-only fasts should definitely be avoided by women who are pregnant or nursing. The baby requires so many nutrients for normal development, and is dependent on the mother’s proper nutrition to receive those nutrients. Fasting while pregnant or nursing is, in a sense, forcing your baby to fast. If you really desire to fast during this time of life, consider a short, one-or two day juice fast. Don’t skimp on the amount of juice you consume during the fast, and consider consulting your doctor prior to fasting.

3. People with cancer. Cancer is usually indicative of, among other things, an immune system that is not in good shape. Water-only fasts are not a good idea during this time. Instead, try a juice fast, consisting of a variety of fresh fruit and vegetable juices for optimal benefit. Discuss with your doctor how a juice fast can best be combined with the treatment plan already in place.

4. People with other health concerns such as diabetes. Water-only fasts should be avoided by those with significant health issues such as diabetes. However, juice fasts MAY be an option, but should be undertaken only under a doctor’s close supervision. Diabetics in particular should monitor their blood sugar levels, and if needed, adjust their medication during a juice fast.

5. The elderly. Water-only fasts should be avoided by elderly people, especially if they generally eat the typical American diet that is high in fat, preservatives, and other chemicals. As is true with the other categories of people who need to be cautious, elderly people who desire to fast may opt for a juice fast, and may also want to consult their doctor prior to embarking on a fast.

If you have significant health concerns, including ones not mentioned above, or if you want to fast for longer than three days, please don’t even consider beginning the fast without first consulting your doctor. He or she can help you develop a fasting plan that will be safe, and perhaps even help rather than hurt your body.

ADJUST YOUR LIFESTYLE WHILE FASTING

Fasting does little good on a spiritual level if you continue on with all of your normal activities and don’t set aside extra time to pray and seek the Lord. Additionally, especially if you participate in a longer fast, your physical body will require more rest, so try to take some time off work if you can while you fast. You have to remember that when Jesus fasted, He went off into the wilderness and spent time alone with God. During His times of fasting, He pulled back from public ministry, and focused instead on one-on-one time with the Father.

ALTERNATIVES TO WATER-ONLY FASTS

Perhaps you’d like to fast, but have a physical condition that limits or completely restricts that possibility. Or perhaps you have a job that is extremely demanding physically and you therefore cannot realistically spend any extended time fasting. If that’s the case, you might want to participate in a partial fast, or fast from something other than food.

Since my experience with metabolic acidosis, I have been unable to fast for longer than two days. Part of that may be due to long-lasting physical ramifications that occurred during my fast that went bad, and part of it may be psychological. Either way, I’ve looked for other options if I desire to fast for longer than two days. Here are some things that I, and others I know, have tried.

1. A partial fast. This is a fast where you cut out all sweets, meat, dairy, fried foods, etc. and eat nothing but fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Unless this is your normal diet, this type of fast requires a great deal of discipline, and the exercise of self control. The good news is, this can be done indefinitely, since it is a very healthy way to eat. If you want to fast for an extended period of time, a partial fast may be a great option.

A less extreme option can be fasting from a particular item such as sugar, coffee, etc. for a specified period of time.

2. A media fast. You may be a computer junkie with an intense need to read and send email, read message boards, or surf the Internet. Or perhaps you can’t imagine a day without reading the newspaper, watching TV, reading novels, or listening to the radio or MP3 player. If that’s the case, fasting from the media may be just what you need to pull you away from the clamoring voices of the world around you so that you can more clearly hear from the Lord. This also, of course, is a type of fast that can be done for long periods of time.

3. A financial fast. Some find it helpful to choose not to spend any unnecessary money for a specified period of time. If you are going to do this type of fast, you’ll need to determine ahead of time what types of things are necessary, and which are not. If you’re married, this is something that needs to be discussed with your spouse, with a high level of agreement before you begin. You might want to consider donating the money you saved during this time to a charity or person in need.

4. Sacrificing anything else you enjoy but that isn’t necessary. An example would be talking on the phone, going out to lunch with friends, or going to the mall.

Fasting doesn’t have to be extreme to be pleasing to the Lord. My prayer is that you’ll seek God’s will for incorporating the discipline of fasting into your life, and that you’ll honor Him, as you fast in a way that helps, rather than harms your body.

Indonesian Shamanic Methods of Fasting & Austerities

Fasting and asceticism are essential practices in Javanese Kejawen and shamanism–especially Indonesian shamanism. Most of the unusual and unique powers acquired in Indonesian occultism are dependent upon the mastery of these disciplines with their many forms and variations. Another important factor that must not be overlooked in the acquisition of these occult powers is the knowledge of the correct timing such as the proper month and day which magickal rites and disciplines are to be commenced, and this is intrinsically linked with the Javanese calender; this however, will not be dealt with in this article for it is beyond its scope. We will mainly focus on the many variations of fasting and the austerities carried-out in Javanese mysticism/occultism.

Fasting as a religio-spiritual practice is known the world over by modern and ancient cultures. Initially, fasting was the result of the inaccessibility of food and proper nourishment in the face of lack and poverty. It was later adopted by the religious/shamanic community for magickal and devotional purposes as it was found to provide certain interesting results psychologically, biologically, and metaphysically. The ancient grimoires, both eastern and western, are filled with rituals that require fasting as a preparation for the work.

Modern researches on fasting reveals that the practice results in health and in a regeneration of the physical body when done rationally and not carried into extremes. Fasting maintains one’s health as it provides the needed rest to the digestive organs.

From the magickal perspective, fasting has an occult effect on both mind and body. Shamanic fasting changes the polarity of the physical body and also raises its vibrations, making it sensitive to the magickal frequencies imperceptible to the five senses. It especially sensitizes the autonomic nervous system making it a fine receptor for receiving psychic impressions that are overlooked by the nerves of the central nervous system.

Psychologically, fasting induces a certain borderline state making the mind susceptible to data fed into it in the form of affirmations, mantras, and prayers, and thus strengthening subconscious response to the information given. Fasting likewise orients the mind to the spirit within making it conducive for inner attunements and communications to take place with the Cosmic Mind and the various intelligences composing It. The increased vibrations of the body, cleansed of all toxic matter through fasting makes it possible for the attraction of certain types of spirit beings that normally would not come into close proximity to us because of the noxious affluvia that we emanate. Indonesian shamanism urges one to fast on one’s natal day (according to the Javanese calender) to accumulate extra power and to strengthen the relationship with one’s guardian angel and what they call the “four spirit brothers.”

There is no denying that fasting aids the etheric body to accumulate cosmic power, especially when done in conjunction with the appropriate metaphysical exercises. Without physical nourishment, the body is forced to acquire the energy it needs through some other channels. When adopted as a regular practice, fasting unfolds psychic sensitivity.

As a spiritual discipline, fasting teaches one to refrain from greed in all of its hideous forms. It is a practical reminder of the injunction of the Master Jesus: “to be in this world, but not of it.” Fasting, when accompanied with contemplation and spiritual reflection, causes beneficial changes in one’s psyche. By fasting from the things of this world one would find oneself being nourished by the Divine Spirit, as Nature hates a vacuum. One would become a “god-eater” where physical nourishment becomes superfluous. This is, of course, quite an advance stage.

Generally speaking, during the period of fasting/austerities one should refrain from generating negative thoughts, feelings, and actions and should be busily engaged in spiritual works. It is a time of introspection and the reaching out (in) for the divinity within us. One’s thoughts ought to be kept at a lofty level. If the fasting is related to a magickal ritual, the meditation or mantras of the work ought to be conducted or recited during the fast. The intention of the abstention of food and drink must be affirmed and impressed upon the subconscious mind ere the commencement of the ritual itself.

In Javanese mysticism, fasting is normally carried out during certain months of the Javanese calender, such as the month of Sura, as these months are considered conducive to spiritual activities. Fasting periods are between 1–40-days. Auspicious days to commence one’s fasting from the Kejawenese point of view are Kliwon-Tuesday, Legi-Wednesday, and Pahing-Thursday. Fasts/austerities ought to be preceded by a holy wash/ritual cleansing, as this puts one into the proper frame of mind–aside from its other metaphysical benefits.

During fasting and the conducting of the austerities, one would indubitably encounter varied forms of temptations, visions, and physical discomfort that would thwart one’s efforts. This is partially the result of the body elemental’s protest against the discipline imposed. Because of its puerile and irrational nature, it will not accept anything that would upset its routine work.

Fasting and austerities brings out the worst in us onto the surface–and this is indeed a blessing as we would be made aware of all the neurosis, psychosis, and complexes lurking within the psyche that requires our attention in the art of transmutation. These dark elements are often projected onto the consciousness in the forms of hallucinations and illusions. This is one of the alchemical stages symbolically described by the mages of old. When these forms arise one should understand what they represent or interpret their symbolical nature. Knowing what they are is the first step of getting rid of them, of which would consequently make it easier for the empowerment of one’s psyche and the raising of one’s magickal power-level. It should be noted that even though such blocks are removed, one still has the source of the problem lying deep within in our spiritual forgetfulness and divine ignorance. They are like tentacles belonging to an unseen creature which if not killed, new limbs would form. However, we are digressing; this topic goes beyond the scope of this present article.

One thing more should be mentioned: traditionally, we are informed that inspirations, visions, and intuitive impressions of worth occurs from 1 am to dawn. It is said that during this period the impressions emanate from a divine source. At other nocturnal periods they issue forth from the subconscious mind or from spirit beings of the lower planes.

At the conclusion of any ritual fast or austerity it is a custom in Javanese occultism/shamanism to offer a thanks-giving consisting of yellow rice, glutinous-rice porridges, fruits, etc.The practitioner would invite friends and relatives to the feast.

Below are most of the methods of fasting and austerities as taught in Kejawen. We have intentionally left out the types of the left-handed path:

Mutih

In this fast one may only eat white rice without anything else to go along with it. Not even salt or other condiments. Mutih is a tasteless meal. One may perhaps simply eat plain bread providing no salt has been added to the dough. In the mutih fast only plain mineral water is permissible to satisfy one’s thirst. One may eat several times a day but with the stated conditions or once a day as perhaps designated in the magickal rite.

Ngeruh

In this fast one may only consume vegetarian meals. Meat is to be completely avoided. Fish, eggs, and animal products are not to be consumed in this fasting method. It is permissible to eat 3 times a day. This fast is actually the refraining from eating animal life-forms.

Ngebleng

This fast/austerity is a cessation of all normal activities. One may not eat, drink, get out of the house, or engage in sexual activities. Sleep should be minimized. One should preferably stay in one’s room for the designated period–normally for 24 hours. During the twilight and night hours, the room should preferably be without physical illumination. The room itself should be dark. In this austerity it is permissible to visit the WC (located in other parts of the house), unlike the next difficult discipline.

Patigeni

Like the above, one may not eat, drink or engage in any sexual activities. In addition, one may not sleep, get out of the room, or have any physical illumination during night hours. One has to be in complete seclusion in a dark room. If one has the natural urge to discharge any waste in has to be done in the room–one with a bathroom attached to it would be a fitting place for this austerity. Depending on the requirements of the magickal rite, this austerity may run for a period of 24 hours, 3, 7 days, or more.

Ngelowong

This is a lighter form of the above two austerities. One may not eat or drink for the designated period. Three hours is the maximum sleep allowed. One may wander outside of the house.

Ngrowot

This is a complete fast from dawn to dusk. When one breaks the fast in the evening, one may only consume fruits–nothing else! This is a fruitarian discipline. It is permissible for one to eat as much as desired so long as they are of the same kind–bananas, for instance. The other harsh disciplines of the above such as seclusion, no sleep, do not apply in this austerity.

Nganyep

This is a fast from consuming anything that would cause a sensation in the tongue. In other words, the things that one eats or drinks should be tasteless. It is similar to mutih except that one has a more variety of foods to choose from: for instance, the tasteless diet biscuits . . .

Ngidang

Only edible leaves are eaten and plain water drunk in this austerity. Other foods and fluids are not allowed to be consumed.

Ngepel

Ngepel means “fist-full.” In this fast, one eats a single meal a day and only a hand-full of rice is allowed or unless indicated by the requirements of the magickal ritual; two or three fist-full may be permitted. A very difficult fast as three days may be required to complete it.

Ngasrep

Only cold, tasteless foods and drinks are eaten and drunk in this fast–three times a day, if you will.

Monday-Thursday Fast

This fast is normally done at the conclusion of the other types of fasts. On Mondays and Thursdays one would refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk. It is uncertain if this fast originates with Islam, as this religion also teaches it.

Wungon

This is a complete fast–the abstinence of food and drinks–for a period of 24 hours. One should also not sleep for that 24 hour period.

Other Austerities

Jejeg

No bending of the legs (i.e. no sitting) for 12 hours from dawn to dusk.

Lelana

Non-stop walking from midnight to 3 am. This is a time for introspection.

Kungkum

This is quite an interesting austerity. Many have found strange sensations occurring in their body as a result of this discipline. The method of Kungkum is thus: one has to submerge oneself naked in a sitting position up to the neck at the mouth of a river where two minor rivers meet. One has to face against the currents. The appropriate place and spot ought to be located before starting this austerity–the currents should not be too strong and the sand-bed flat. The environment should be quiet without other human beings lingering about. Commenced in the middle of the night, Kungkum is to be carried-out for the designated period by the magickal rite which may be 3 hours or more. Needless to say, this requires lots of practice. One must not fall asleep while doing the Kungkum as this would be perilous–one must not even move as this would defeat the purpose of the austerity. Before entering the river one has to perform a ritual cleansing. While in the actual act of submerging into the water the following mantra ought to be recited:

“Putih-putihing mripatku Sayidina Kilir, Ireng-irenging mripatku Sunan Kali Jaga, Telenging mripatku Kanjeng Nabi Muhammad.”

The eyes should be shut, and the hand crossed over the chest. The body’s lower orifices also ought to be closed (perhaps one with a plug made out of cork) and the breathing regulated accordingly.

The Kungkum discipline is often carried-out for a period of 7 consecutive nights. It is especially useful in accumulating magickal force.

Ngalong

In this austerity one meditates with the feet up in the air with the head pointing downwards. The feet may be supported by a wall or one may do any related yoga asana for this. More advanced methods requires one to hang oneself upside down on tree branches, like bats. One should not attempt to sway or move while hanging thus. Physically, the constant exercise of this discipline helps the practitioner to develop the ability to control the breath–to refrain from breathing for hours at a time. This austerity is accompanied by the Ngrowot fasting method.

Ngeluwang/Nglowong

Ngeluwang is considered to be a frightening austerity that really tests one’s courage. Various magickal powers are said to be acquired through the constant practice of Ngleluwang such as clairvoyance and the ability to making another see illusions. In Ngeluwang one has to place oneself in a large hole dug for the purpose, preferably in a graveyard or in a quiet place, and to remain there for the designated period–normally 24 hours. The basic biological needs of the body such as nourishment may be catered to. While carrying out this austerity one may face many temptations and frightening visions. Before entering the hole, the mantra below ought to be recited:

“Niat ingsun nglowong, anutupi badan kang bolong, siro mara sira mati, kang ganggu marang jiwa ingsun, lebur kaya dene banyu krana Allah Ta’ala.”

From the descriptions of the types of fasting and austerities above, it can be seen that they are not easy to accomplish. The people of our contemporary times lack the fortitude as compared with the older generations; thus many do not possess the powers that their ancestors displayed.

Nowadays, with the materialistic orientation and life-style, people expect instant powers without too much effort. Although certain powers may be acquired through a transference of power, these are not the especially unique ones as applied and exhibited by the famed heroes of old, and may be temporary in nature depending upon the process used and personal potency of the channeler of the power. Perhaps we will provide examples of magickal rituals of occult-power acquisition that makes use of these shamanic fasting in future articles.

Since Kejawen or Javanese mysticism, and traditional shamanism have been influenced greatly by Islam, it would be most appropriate to complete this article by providing the types of fasting (called “saum” or “siyam” in Arabic. Lit. “self-control”) as enjoined by this religion.

Basically, Islam categorizes two forms of fasting: obligatory and non-obligatory. The obligatory fast is part of the five-pillars of Islam, which is the mandatory fasting period in the month of Ramadan. Below we list the types of fasts:

The Ramadan Fast

This is the fast carried-out for the whole month of Ramadan. Islam does not encourage complete fasts such as taught in shamanism, thus there is food intake but within the hours designated. The Ramadan fast commences at dawn and ends at dusk–roughly 12 hours. Food and drinks may be consumed at any hour other than the 12-hour daylight period.

The Fast of King David

This non-obligatory fast is said to have its origin with the Hebrew King. Muhammad The Prophet, blessed is his name, is supposed to have said that among the non-obligatory fasts, the fast of King David is the best. This is recorded in the Bukhari and Muslim hadith, or recorded sayings of the Prophet. The method of the fast is similar to the one done in the month of Ramadan except that it is done every other day–fast one day, rest the next.

The Three-day Fast

This fast is done every month of the Arabic/Islamic calender for three consecutive days. The method is as the Ramadan fast. The best dates to commence this is on the 13th, 14th and 15th. This fast is non-obligatory.

The Six-day Fast

This fast is done for six days, preferably consecutive days in the month (Syawal) following Ramadan. Like the obligatory fast, no nourishment is taken from dawn to dusk. This is a non-obligatory fast like the above.

The Arafah-day Fast

To those who are not going on the pilgrimage to the Ka’ba, the Arafah-day fast is suggested for cleansing and the gaining of merit. It is done on the 9th day of the month of Zulhijah. This non-obligatory fast is supposed to wipe one’s sins created within a two-year period–the year before the fast and the year after.

The Eighth-day Fast

Another single-day fast is the one done in the month of Zulhijah, just a day prior to the Arafah-day fast.

The Tasu’a and Asura Fast

This fast takes place on the 9th and 10th day of the month of Muharam.

The Al-Baidh (Full Moon) Fast

It is recorded that the Prophet enjoyed fasting in this period and encouraged others to do so. This is a three-day fast during the full moon.

Safe Fasting – 6 Simple Steps For Success

Many people believe that there’s no such thing as safe fasting. Yet well conducted study after study with both animals and humans have proven that it’s safe and has numerous .

The key to safe fasting is to do short-term fasts, otherwise known as intermittent fasting. The interval between eating is usually between 16 and 36 hours. This can be done every day, every second day, 1-3 times a week or only a few times a month. People who experiment with intermittent fasting often try several different ‘styles’ to see which one suits them best.

Most people don’t realize that intermittent fasting has many of the same that intense exercise does, but with a lot less effort. For example:

1. increase in growth hormone levels

2. reduced insulin

3. fat burning and, as long as a bit of resistance training is done every week, no loss in muscle tissue

4. increased energy (due to the increase in epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are responsible for making us feel alert)

5. appetite suppression. Yes, although this isn’t always experienced during the first few fasts, it increasingly becomes the case the longer a person practices the art of short-term fasting

6 Simple Steps for Successful Safe Fasting

1. Find a good, clearly written resource on intermittent fasting authored by someone who has practiced it for a long time and keeps up with the latest and best research.

2. Decide which non-caloric beverages you’ll have on your fasting days.

During the fasting hours, only non-caloric, or very low-caloric, beverages should be consumed. That means no juice, sugar in your coffee, etc.

3. If you’re new to fasting, start by fasting once or twice a week at most.

You can continue with 1-2 x a week fasts indefinitely if you wish. There isn’t strong evidence that fasting more often is a lot better. Some people like to do it more frequently. It’s very individual.

4. Fast in the time-frame that seems most suitable for your lifestyle.

You can adjust the time-frame whenever you feel what you’re doing isn’t working well.

5. Do the best you can to ride out feelings of discomfort.

Keeping busy can help, as can caffeinated drinks or exercise. Yes, it’s safe to work out while fasted. Many people, including me, find that their workouts are more satisfying and their energy is higher on fasting days, and that we’re more productive in general!

After a few fasts discomfort will usually go down considerably. It’s therefore important to fast a few times to truly give intermittent fasting a chance.

If you feel light-headed or get headaches, there is probably no reason to worry. Unless you have been formally diagnosed as hypoglycemic, your blood sugar shouldn’t drop too low during your short-term fast (yes, this has been studied). You may simply be feeling your body go into full-out fat burning mode which, over time, is a lot easier to cope with.

Discomfort may also come from the withdrawal from food, particularly if you have allergies that you haven’t been fully aware of. Remind yourself that short-term fasts are safe. It would take not eating for days and days on end to cause any harm. Even lean people have reserves to draw on during short-term fasts.

6. Eat normally during your non-fasting hours/days.

Act like the fast never happened. In other words, don’t eat more to reward yourself for completing a fast. Simply resume eating at the times that you normally would. Over time you’ll become more aware of your body and eating habits and you can adjust what and when you eat.

Something encouraging to keep in mind: if you’re fasting 2 times a week, you can lose 1-2 lbs in only 2 days, rather than 7 days on a standard weight loss diet.

If you want to gain weight or maintain it, you can adjust what you eat to support that goal. Fasting once a week can be very good for maintenance, offsetting any extra calories you might have consumed during the week.

Fasting can help you get in touch with your body in helpful ways – ways that are simply not possible with other ‘diets’. Many people have unknowingly trained their bodies to expect food every few hours. It’s possible to retrain your body, returning it to a healthier state. Soon you may come to enjoy the benefits of alternating between the fed and fasting state. Fasting days can be freeing. No need to worry about what to eat!

Safe fasting is not only possible, the long-term effects are desirable. The key is doing it intermittently with guidance from people who understand and practice it regularly.

If there is an epidemic in our world, it is one of spiritual blindness. The emptiness in the hearts of the masses many not always show outwardly, but in the quietness of one’s soul there is no place to hide.

As much as technology may make our lives easier, and as much as the modern world may increase our comfort… NOTHING in this world will EVER fill the void inside except a spiritual filling – an awakening to our “true” unseen identity. It can be quite simple to disregard the weeping heart and hold back the pain with work, money, sex, food, alcohol and drugs. But when we look in the mirror, ALL of us know the truth behind our eyes.

Inside is a little boy or girl trying to make sense of endless things happening all around him or her … a world for grown ups that nobody taught us how to live in. That little boy or girl, crying out for love and utilizing everything external to try to fill the bottomless pit in the center of his or her heart. Trying to find worthiness and “a purpose” in a three-dimensional world where everything eventually fades and ceases to exist. In the end, do we ever believe that we are worth it?

Or do we feign happiness the best way that we can, knowing in our heart of hearts that it is all a show. Do we really love in our relationships, or do we take “hostages” and demand that they constantly fulfill our blown-up expectations? If there is war in our hearts, it will eventually spill out to the external world around us.

And many are the victims we often leave behind… all we can often do is pray and hope for that spiritual awakening. Pray that, someway, somehow, the eyes of our understanding may be opened so that we can see a ray of light at the end of the road… something that will make sense of the pain, chaos and desperation all around us.

The spiritual void leads to depressive disorders, feeling overwhelmed or that life is spinning out of control… there is great distress. Feelings get polluted with poisonous bitterness, self hatred and feelings of being “less than” … a failure. Many individuals have to have a Radio or television to view/listen to at all times because they cannot withstand being alone with themselves.

Silence becomes unbearable as the voice of self-condemnation takes over and yells in our minds without ceasing. While fasting, the internal quietness can be quite deep. Loud, painful inner thoughts turn to silence, perhaps for the very first time, we are able to hear the words of the Spirit.

Treating this spiritual void calls for draining the heart and soul of all of the rubbish that impedes our connection with God. Fasting is by far one of the most powerful tools that I know which makes this possible because it leads us to empty ourselves “from ourselves.” Once we can set aside the finite voice of self, we can then turn our ear and hear the infinite, loving and powerful voice of God.

And in listening to this Voice, we wake up from the dream and come to know a new way… a better way – a way of peace and freedom. This does NOT mean that life will always be a bowl of cherries. You and I both now that that would be a lie. BUT, spiritual connection via frequent fasting is a great antidote that will keep the void from taking over and consuming our lives.
