5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is a compound produced in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. It is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin.
5-HTP supplements have become popular because it is thought that providing the body with 5-HTP in pill form can boost the body’s serotonin levels, similar to the antidepressants that are thought to increase the amount of serotonin available to the brain.
5-HTP is manufactured from the seeds of an African plant, Griffonia simplicifolia. It is found in health food stores, online, and at some drug stores. DepressionAnxiety
Insomnia
Fibromyalgia
Migraine
Weight Loss5-HTP is most commonly used for depression. Because it is thought to work like serotonin antidepressants, 5-HTP has also been used for other conditions for which these antidepressants are prescribed, such as anxiety, insomnia, fibromyalgia, and migraine. Depression
Several small clinical trials have found that 5-HTP is as effective as antidepressants. For example, in a six week clinical trial, 63 people were given either 5-HTP (100 mg three times a day) or an antidepressant (fluvoxamine, 50 mg three times a day). The 5-HTP was found to be as effective as the antidepressant, with fewer side effects.
However, a 2002 systematic review of studies published between 1966 to 2000 found that only one out of 108 studies met the quality standards.
The small study that did meet the quality criteria found that 5-HTP worked better than placebo at alleviating depression.
MigraineSome research indicates that 5-HTP may prevent migraines and reduce the frequency and severity of migraines, however large randomized controlled trials are needed.
In one study, 124 people were given 5-HTP (600 mg/day) or the drug methysergide. After 6 months, 5-HTP was found to be as effective as methysergide in reducing the severity and duration of migraines.
Another study looked at 5-HTP or the drug propranolol for 4 months. Both treatments resulted in a statistically significant reduction in the frequency of migraines. However, the propranolol group fared better, with a reduction in the duration of episodes and the number of analgesics used for the treatment of episodes.
FibromyalgiaFibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by fatigue, widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, and multiple tender points.
A double-blind, placebo controlled study looked at 5-HTP or placebo in 50 people with fibromyalgia. After four weeks, there was improvement in pain, stiffness, anxiety, fatigue, and sleep. Side effects were mild and transient.
InsomniaSerotonin is converted into melatonin, a hormone need to regulate sleep-wake cycles. Because 5-HTP is thought to increase serotonin levels, it may increase melatonin and help normalize sleep patterns.Potential side effects of 5-HTP include nausea, dizziness, and diarrhea. Rarely, allergic reaction to the supplement may occur.
The safety of 5-HTP in pregnant or nursing women and people with liver or kidney disease has not been established.
Children with Down’s syndrome should not take 5-HTP.
Peak X
In 1998, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported having detected a chemical compound known as “peak x” in some 5-HTP products. Peak x had been previously associated with the supplement tryptophan, which is made into 5-HTP in the body.
Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome
Tryptophan was taken off the market when thousands of people developed a severe blood disorder called Eosinophilia – Myalgia Syndrome (EMS). The cause was later traced to a contaminant found only in batches of tryptophan manufactured by one Japanese company, Showa Denko.
Showa Denko, the source of up to 60% of all the tryptophan sold in the United States, had used an untested manufacturing process that reduced the amount of activated charcoal used to filter fermented raw tryptophan. Some reports suggest that purity may be a potential problem for 5-HTP as well. No cases of EMS resulting from 5-HTP use have been reported, however.
This is a drugs that may interact with 5-HTP supplements.Sources

I was Stage 3/4 when I found out I had kidney disease. It took 3 years to reach Stage 5. I then went on APD for 2 1/2 years, then switched to haemo for 2 years. I had a transplant in June. I have had the best of both worlds in terms of dialysis.

Hey, JuJu? Is it really just hungry hormones? Could it also be a hunger neural pathway has been burnt into your/our brain/s?
There's an article into today's NYTimes Health Section (availible online for free, but ya gotta register) about children and abdominal pain. Think tummy aches to the nth degree. Poor kids. At one point a doc suggests that part of what happens is an increased sensitivity to pain caused by the brain developing “abnormal pain pathways, so that the volume of pain signaling is being turned up and up.”
So, I was wondering. Could the same thing be happening with hunger signals? From the same article: “The gastrointestinal tract is awash in nerve cells and neurotransmitters. About 95 percent of the body's neurotransmitter serotonin is in the intestinal tract. Stress, nervousness, fear and other emotions often play out their own drama in the gut. In children with abdominal [...]

I disagree with the councillors delaying the water supply update in Rangiora and surrounding areas. It is important that the quality of water is improved in all areas. With the expansion building Rangiora and also the surrounding areas reliable supply and quality is essential.
Thanks Bev. As we both know, Rangiora water is not meeting national quality standards because it is not secure from from such protozoan contamination as giardia and cryptosporidium. David

Red wine always caused me to wake about 3 a.m. and finally drift off to sleep right when my alarm clock started ringing. I can't drink any wine at all anymore due to instant headaches. However, I was recently reading about histamines in wine (I do miss it sometimes!), and came across a mention of an amino acid… which lead me to find info like this online: “Try to avoid foods like cheese, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, spinach and wine close to bedtime, as these foods contain tyramine, an amino acid which raises the release of the brain stimulant norepinephrine and promotes alertness.”
It’s important to note that clinical trials have been falsified in favour of the drug companies. It’s important to note that treatment levels for certain conditions e.g. cholestorol have been increased to capture more people for drug treatment with statins. It’s important to note that statins cause more harm than cholestorol to the body and are unnecessary. If they can’t make money from patenting their products DC’s will do everything in their power to discredit effective unpatentable therapies
Fort Smith is getting an Academy sporting store opens next week of course my crazy SIL is suppose to go work there so that tells me they will hire anyone, because it will be job 19 in a year.
Tulsa has a couple of good health food stores, I order a lot of my stuff online because unfortunately Fort Smith as big as it is has no good health food stores.
Well, people with Down’s Syndrome ARE alive.
I agree, and a lot of vegan's don't know that you have to take dietary supplements up the wazoo to make up for the nutrients in meat and dairy that your body needs to stay alive!

My name is Lori Zarlenga-Blaquiere. I am requesting a full investigation of former President George W. Bush and his administration and Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri with regard to illegally issuing orders to kidnap and murder me. The United States Government has illegally wiretapped my telephones, hacked my computers, and continued to surveillance me to date, despite the newly elected President Barrack Obama.
I began being surveillanced sometime after I filed a lawsuit Blaquiere v. Showa Denko K.K. et al(U.S. District Court Rhode Island, C.A. No. 1: 95-629) (U.S District Court South Carolina, MDL C.A.No.7:96-361-0) ( United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, C.A. No. 03-1783), ( United States Supreme Court C.A. No. 03-5562).
I filed the above lawsuits against Showa Denko K.K. et al as a result of being injured by contaminated genetically engineered L-tryptophan manufactured by Showa Denko K.K. which caused the first genetically engineered disease, ( EMS) Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome.
Contaminated genetically engineered L-tryptophan manufactured by Showa Denko K.K. killed and severely injured thousands of Americans.
The L-tryptophan problem is the fault of the FDA due to lack of enforcement of 172.320, among other violations of the FDA rules. Therefore, the FDA permitted the continued illegal use of L-tryptophan.
If the FDA had enforced action against Showa Denko K.K.,for violation of the FDA rules, then L-tryptophan would not have been on the market and sold to the American Public and caused death and illnesses associated with the sales of L-tryptophan in violation of the FDA rule.
The EMS epidemic first took place in 1989, during President Bush SR’s administration.
There were political payoffs and backroom deals to fraudulently mislead and misdirect the scientific investigation of the diagnosis of Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome and to publish pseudo-scientific reports, among other things, inorder to insulate FDA and Showa Denko K.K.
My former lawyer Dennis Mackin who represented me in 2001, filed in the MDL motions to extend further discovery damaging to Showa Denko K.K. and the FDA, among others. The above said motions could reopen previously settled lawsuits. My former lawyer Dennis Mackin signed a stipulation without my knowledge to not go forward with motions to extend discovery and was paid off to withdraw from my case.
However, I continued to pursue the motions to extend discovery after my lawyer withdrew from my case.
There was key evidence tampered with in my case and illegal tactics used in an attempt to sabotage my case. In 2003, my case was settled for 500,000 dollars. However, the general release reflects my case as technically open.
I was informed by a lawyer that I was paid a half a million dollars not for what I know about Showa Denko K.K. and the FDA’s wrongdoing, but for what I do not know through which further discovery would uncover and expose.
On December 7, 2006, I filed a complaint in the United States District Court of Rhode Island,
( Lori Zarlenga-Blaquiere v. Edward Charbonea et al C.A. No. 06-543 ML ), against a number of United States Government Officials and agencies in connection with orders to kidnap and murder me.
On January 22, 2006, I was kidnapped by Warwick, Rhode Island police officer Joseph Mee.
There were other police officers on the scene including a plain clothes man who assisted officer Mee who was omitted from the warwick police dispatch log. There are other incidents of law enforcements pursuit to capture me and covering up their criminal activities.
My case is legitimate. The criminal activities mentioned herein are ongoing and have continued to date.

We understand that you quit the clinical trial for the right reason. We wish that the money wasn't an issue & you had been free not to start it in the first place if that was your choice. But basically, your health is more important, and it was your ethical right to quit at any time. I'm terribly sorry to hear that you are having withdrawal symptoms. And speaking personally, I don't give a flying fig if you do a 'Drunken BlogTV' or not, so please don't feel pressured. <3
I found this to be a most entertaining introduction to the important subject of ginans and the esoteric knowledge of the highest order that these inspired musical compilations impart to us.
Music, for me personally, has always resonated well with my being. Coming from the western tradition myself and being a 51 year old baby boomer, I grew up on a diet of the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Carlos Santana, The Eagles, Chicago, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Neil Diamond, Michael Jackson, The Bee Gees and the like. Not really being one to listen to the words of a song generally, I instead choose a favourite song based on the beat and rhythms produced by the instruments(including songs by the above-mentioned well-known artists). This would also explain why I am also very fond of instrumental music by Strunz and Farah, various Latin American and Spanish beats and rhythms and dance music.
Music for me causes the increased release in my brain of the neurotransmitter serotonin, a substance that promotes a sense of well-being, increased immunity and a host of other benefits. I particularly enjoy a late-night drive alone in my car listening to my favourite music and the not-so-surprising thing as I cruise the streets of Toronto in the deep darkness is that at the stop lights, when I look into the adjoining car, I see the next driver doing exactly the same thing that I am doing, flipping radio stations or changing CDs to find the best music to listen to. The camaraderie between music lovers navigating the streets of our city(and I suspect many other cities) is both infectious and heartwarming.
Coming back to the subject of ginans, the fact that I never learned any South Asian language limits my understanding of some of the verbal messages imparted by our Pirs but I do benefit immensely from ginan translations. Nevertheless, and not surprisingly, the particular 'raag' or tune and ambience that envelopes us when we listen to a well-sung ginan is enough, I find, to coax us to melt ourselves into the divine essence and partake of a reality that is well-beyond words, sentences and sequential thinking.

I agree with twitchgt and WoWmista, you are retarded. That being said, would you please expound on your opinion why you think the United States Army Drill Team is “terrable”? ……I would wager that you either didn’t vote for president or you voted for obama. If you voted for obama, then it would all make sense why you are mentally retarded.

FIBROMYALGIA: (Exercising/Water)
Fibromyalgia is the wide spread pain in the muscles and soft tissues above and below the waist on both sides of the body. Exercising helps reduce fibromyalgia pain by increasing the hearts pulse rate to allow more blood flow to the muscle. Running, walking, and actives that physically increase your heart rate help with reducing the pain. Also, stretching and strength training help control fibromyalgia pain and muscle tenderness. By exercising just 3 times a week will improve your life on many levels. Exercising can also relieve fatigue and depression. The best work out for fibromyalgia pain is water exercises (water aerobics). Doing water exercises 3 days out of the week for 60 minutes showed improvement in people who have fibromyalgia.
Elite In-Home Personal Training has a trainer who has experience in teaching water aerobics so don’t hesitate in giving us a call to see what we can do for you. We guarantee results! And remember our mission is to incorporate fitness into your life style.

Exercise raises your serotonin levels, that's why it feels so good. I like to push 1-3 miles a week but the weather is keeping me indoors just now and it gives me cabin fever! haha.

I wonder if the genetics that influence serotonin levels then influence human behavior to an extent.
I met with Dr. Brian Clement in Vero Beach Florida in 2007, and asked him if he had ever heard of Polycystic Kidney Disease before and he said yes, but had not really done to much with it. I explained that I was Founder of End PKD Inc. and let him know that effected 600,000 American and 20 million Worldwide, & he was suprised at that number. This video is misleading, considering most people, Governors of States and people who run for President have never heard of PKD this is unfortunate effort

I use engine/wheel cleaner. It's an aggressive chemical compound but it's ok for tires. I spray a good amount of product on your white wall, let it sit for a while and start scrubbing it with a sponge. I keep soaking it with the product and eventually the white walls will look like new again. It takes a lot more effort and time to do it with a sponge but it won't make the surface of the tire rough.

humans are the only animals with monkey ears… but anyway, i KNOW that when you die you are reborn… time isnt real, its man made… when you die all your neutrients and chemicals that made you alive are needed to create a baby in another female, the female animal gets these resources from eating bugs or plants that ate you after you died, its very simple… your “soul” is a chemical compound, and it gets used over and over again, forever
I work with human/animal tissue in culture, and I can tell you that it is not necessarily more accurate. In fact many diseases would be cured if everything that worked with culture samples worked in the body. The truth is often the most reliable and accurate alternative to direct clinical trials is a preclinical animal model (admittedly this is not always true). In addition, I know people who do animal work and believe me not one of them do it for pleasure.
Hi Angelique,
Today just happens to be the 7th birthday of my son, Ethan, who has Down Syndrome. So the joy that he is to our family has been on my mind all day anyhow. I didn't know that he would be “different” when he was in the womb. But 7 years later, some days I never think about those words “down syndrome”. He is Ethan! Be blessed!
