Valerian

Other names: All-heal, Amantilla, Setwall, Setewale, Capon’s Tail, Valeriana officinalis

Valerian is a plant native to Europe and Asia. It grows to up to four feet high and has trumpet-shaped flowers. The roots are used medicinally. Although the fresh root is relatively odorless, the dried root has a strong odor that many find unpleasant.

Valerian is believed to have been used since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. It was used as a folk remedy for a variety of conditions such as sleeping problems, digestive complaints, nervousness, trembling, tension headaches and heart palpitations. Valerian’s popularity waned with the introduction of prescription sleep medication.

There is no consensus on what the active constituents of valerian are. It’s possible that valerian’s activity may result from a combination of compounds rather than any one. Valerian appears to increase the body’s available supply of the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), possibly by increasing its production, decreasing its absorption or slowing its breakdown.

Valerian can be found in capsule, tea, tablet or liquid extract forms in most , some drugstores and online.

Insomnia

The use of valerian is supported by some evidence from clinical studies. The problem with many of the studies, however, is they’ve generally been small, used different amounts of valerian for varying lengths of time, or had problems with the study design, making it impossible to form a conclusion about the effectiveness of valerian.

Valerian appears to be less effective than prescription sleep medication. One possible advantage of valerian, however, is that it may not have as much of a “hangover” effect on mental or physical functioning the following day. Also, people taking sleeping pills sometimes have a temporary worsening of insomnia when they are discontinued, an effect that hasn’t been reported with valerian.

Anxiety

Valerian is also used for anxiety, although there’s insufficient evidence that it’s effective.

Pregnant or nursing women and children should not use valerian.

People taking medications for insomnia or anxiety, such as benzodiazepines, should not combine these medications with valerian.

Side effects of valerian may include headache, dizziness, itchiness, upset stomach, drowsiness during the daytime, dry mouth and vivid.dreams.

Rarely, liver damage has been associated with the use of valerian. It’s not certain whether the cause of the liver damage was due to valerian itself or to contaminants in the product. Until we know more, people should use valerian only under the supervision of a qualified health care practitioner and those with liver disease should avoid it. Although liver damage doesn’t always produce noticeable symptoms, if excessive tiredness, intense itching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pain or discomfort in the upper right side of the abdomen, or a yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin occurs, see your doctor immediately.

Valerian may cause excessive sleepiness or daytime drowsiness if combined with other drugs that cause drowsiness, such as the benzodiazepines Ativan (lorazepam) or Valium (diazepam), some antidepressants, narcotics such as codeine, and barbituates such as phenobarbitol, or with over-the-counter sleep and cold products containing diphenhydramine and doxylamine.

It may also cause excessive sleepiness if taken with herbs thought to have a sedative effect, such as hops, catnip and kava.

Valerian is broken down in the liver. Theoretically, it could interfere with the effectiveness of medications that are broken down by the same liver enzymes, such as: allergy medications like Allegra (fexofenadine)
cholesterol medication such as Mevacor (lovastatin)
antifungal drugs such as Sporanox (itraconazole) and Nizoral (ketoconazole)
cancer medications such as Camptosar (irinotecan), Etopophos, Vepesid (etoposide), Gleevec (STI571), Taxol (paclitaxel), Velbe (vinblastine) or Oncovin (vincristine) Sources:

The Candida Diet

Candida albicans is a yeast that normally resides in the body in the digestive tract and vagina. Candida levels are kept in check by the immune system and beneficial probiotic bacteria in the body.

If probiotic bacteria are killed by antibiotics or if the immune system becomes weakened, Candida yeast may grow unchecked.

Local infections, such as oral thrush, skin infections and vaginal yeast infections in women can result.

People with severely weakened immune systems, such as those with cancer or AIDS, may develop widespread Candida infection, a serious medical condition called systemic candidiasis.

Some alternative practitioners believe that overgrowth of candida albicans yeast in the intestines is responsible for a yeast syndrome that results in symptoms such as fatigue, headache, mood swings, sinus congestion, depression, poor memory and concentration, and cravings for sweets.

The excess Candida yeast in the intestines is then thought to penetrate the intestinal wall, causing yeast and other unwanted particles to be absorbed into the body. The absorbed yeast particles are believed to activate the immune system, resulting in an allergic hypersensitivity to Candida.

This yeast syndrome, popularized by William Crook, MD, in his 1983 book, The Yeast Connection, is considered highly controversial. Most conventional doctors think this syndrome is overdiagnosed by holistic practitioners and many disagree with the validity of the diagnosis.

Take the Candida Yeast Screening Quiz Some alternative practitioners use diet to address Candida overgrowth. For example, Dr. Crook recommends people with Candida overgrowth follow certain diet guidelines: Avoid sugar. According to Dr. Crook, sugar promotes the growth of yeast. The total carbohydrate intake per day is often limited. For example, during the initial two to three weeks on the diet, the carbohydrate intake may be restricted to less than 60 grams per day, depending on age, health, activity level, and the extent of food sensitivities. Low-carbohydrate foods such as meat, chicken, turkey, shellfish, non-starchy vegetables, and certain nuts are emphasized instead. As symptoms subside, the carbohydrate total of the diet is often gradually increased. Avoid foods containing any type of yeast. This includes fermented foods such as bread made with yeast, cheese, tomato paste, mushrooms, and beer. Although Dr. Crook believed that people with Candida overgrowth would also be allergic to other fungi, not all practitioners believe this restriction is necessary.

The length of time on a Candida diet depends on the length of time one has had symptoms and the severity of the symptoms. The general level of health is another important factor to alternative practitioners when recommending a treatment plan.

People who do respond to the diet often report that it takes a minimum of four weeks before any improvement is noticeable. For many, it may take months. Once there is sufficient improvement in symptoms, practitioners suggest slowly reintroducing foods from the restricted list back into the diet.

Another important component of Dr. Crook’s plan is the use of herbs and supplements, or in certain cases, prescription drugs, to decrease the amount of Candida yeast in the body.

Alternative practitioners usually recommend starting with smaller amounts of herbs and supplements and increasing gradually. Otherwise, a temporary worsening of symptoms called a Herxheimer reaction, or yeast die-off, may occur. It is believed to result when Candida yeast are killed and they release protein fragments and toxins that trigger an antibody response from the immune system. Natural Remedies for Candida

Lucid Dreaming is Said to Help Stop Frequent Nightmares and Allow A Person to Control His or Her Dreams

Lucid Dreaming is Said to Help Stop Frequent Nightmares and Allow A Person to Control His or Her Dreams

The vast majority of people think of dreams as something mysterious which is not within our power to control. Whether we have nightmares or very pleasant dreams, not everyone is aware that it is in fact possible to stop these dreams from being purely random. Through the method called lucid dreaming, dream control is something that anyone can have. But what is lucid dreaming and how does one do it? What are the benefits of being in the drivers seat for these nocturnal journeys? Keep reading to find out more about the practice of dream control.

What Is Dream Control?

Dream control, or lucid dreaming is when you are completely aware that you are dreaming while you are doing so; and in control of the events which take place within the dream. Even while your body is sound asleep, your mind knows that you are dreaming and you are in the director’s chair for the proceedings.

People who suffer from frequent nightmares can find relief with dream control. Once they learn to use this powerful technique, they can vanquish the nightmares and return to restful sleep.

Common Techniques For Inducing Lucid Dreaming

A rather effective method known for achieving lucid dreaming involves the use of Binaural Audio, which entails listening to two different frequencies at the same time in order to synchronize the brain waves, bringing about a deep sense of relaxation, as well as the state in which lucid dreaming is possible – rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

There are many other techniques which have been employed by experts in the field. Regardless of how one trains their mind to start using dream control, the idea in every case is to let the dreamer come to the awareness that they are dreaming and start to take control of their dreams.

This training begins while you are still awake. The goal is to remember to perform some kind of cue which will remind us that we are dreaming; this allows dream control to begin.

This can be as simple as telling yourself that you will be dreaming and that you will do or say a certain thing in the dream; which will tell you that you are dreaming, setting off a state of lucid dreaming.

This particular method to dream control is referred to as MILD, or mnemonic induction of lucid dreams, which was discovered by scientist Dr. Stephen LaBerge. With this approach, your brain is then in complete control as to what occurs in the dream, meaning that nothing could or would come of harm to you as it’s simply all in the mind and you are only limited by your own imagination.

You can also achieve lucid dreaming by means of keeping a dream diary. You’ll write down everything you can remember about your dreams immediate after awakening; this will train you to start remembering your dreams and being able to start using dream control. You’ll find that after using this technique for a while, you’ll be able to replay a recent dream; except this time, you’ll be in control.

You can beat back those nightmares, go anywhere, do anything and talk to anyone you want in these dreams. There are no limits except for your imagination to your dreams once you have mastered the techniques of dream control.

However, there can be too much of the good thing which is lucid dreaming. Dreams can tell us important things, according to psychologists. So while you should unlock your full potential to have lucid dreaming experiences, make sure to give yourself some time off now and then to have natural dreams.

Alleviate Seasonal Allergies With “Local” Honey

Consuming Small Amounts of Honey Produced By Bees Indigenous To Where You Live Can Help Reduce Alleviate Allergies

Consuming Small Amounts of Honey Produced By Bees Indigenous To Where You Live Can Help Reduce Alleviate Allergies

Many people claim to get relief from seasonal allergies (hay fever) symptoms by drinking local honey before the onset of allergy season. How is this possible? Local honey – honey produced as close to where you live as possible – has small amounts of “local” allergens that have been delivered by the bees that gathered pollen from trees, flowers, and plants in your area. When one consumes small amounts of allergens specifically related to the region where one lives, the idea is that one can build immunity to them. It works like an allergy shot. When someone gets an allergy shot at their doctor’s office, they are actually getting small amounts of different allergens.

It is recommended that a person purchase honey that was produced as close to their home as possible. This way, it ensures that it will contain the allergens they are exposed to on a daily basis. They should also begin drinking the raw honey several months before allergy season begins so as to build up immunity to the allergens – before they arrive.

In the beginning, it is recommended that a person take very small doses to see how they will react and then gradually increase. People with severe allergies may have a severe allergic reaction to the allergens in the raw honey. Eventually, one should drink about two teaspoons of the raw honey per day. To get the maximum effects, the local honey should be unheated, unpasteurized, and raw. However, anyone under the age of one should never consume raw honey. Raw Honey contains Botulinum spores which hardly ever affect adults. However, infants have less mature gastrointestinal tracts which may allow the spores to germinate and lead to botulism.

Besides reducing seasonal allergies, raw honey has many other as well. Raw honey can help ease digestion, relieve constipation, and may even reduce cancer. Raw honey is also great in relieving morning sickness and great for sore throats. And best of all, there are virtually no risks or side effects with taking raw honey compared to over the counter medications.

To find the most local honey, you may contact a local bee keeper or go to the next farmers market. Try to get the raw honey that is closest to home. Immunizing yourself to allergens that you are never exposed to carries no benefits. It is also recommended that you don’t plant any plants that you know you are allergic to. To build immunity, you must be exposed in small doses. Large doses of allergens will only increase your likelihood of developing worse allergies to them.

Treating Hair Loss In Men

Approximately 75% of Men Will Experience Hair Loss In One Form or Another During The Course of Their Lives

Approximately 75% of Men Will Experience Hair Loss In One Form or Another During The Course of Their Lives

It is estimated that approximately 75% of men will experience loss or hair thinning in one form or another during the course of their lives. Consequently, there is a huge demand for hair thickening products.

The main culprit for hair thinning is an enzyme called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT is produced by the male hormone testosterone and is the the number one enemy in hair loss. It attacks the hair follicle and makes it shrink, causing the thinning effect over time. Although other factors such as a poor diet and stress can also foster thinning hair, DHT is to blame in the vast majority of cases.

The market for hair thickening products is huge. There are literally thousands of products promising to thicken hair and regrow hair. The fact, though, is that there are only 2 products approved by the FDA as a hair loss treatment. These are finasteride and Minoxidil.
Finasteride inhibits the formation of DHT and, on the other hand, it is believed that minoxidil increases the flow of blood to the hair follicles. Both products have had success in slowing down further hair loss and thinning hair, and even halting further thinning. In a few cases new hair has started to regrow as a result of using these products. Results of using the products can take up to one year before they are achieved and vary from person to person.

Besides Minoxidil and Finasteride hundreds of other products claim that they too can thicken hair, stop thinning and regrow hair. If you decide to try anything else, it is advised that you check out exactly what the ingredients are and whether they are safe. Even organic products can contain ingredients that might not be safe for everyone. Other alternatives or complements to a medical approach to thinning hair is the use of wigs and hair pieces. Although expensive at the top end the results can be excellent.
