More Tips for Juice Fasting Success

General Juice Fasting Rules:

o Have freshly prepared fruit and veggie juice and do not store it for over 72 hours. If you cannot consume it right away, put it into an airtight jug or jar. It is important for the juice to be sealed air tight to avert premature spoilage. Juice extracted freshly from fruits and/or vegetables is a huge nutritional powerhouse. It does, however, spoil quite quickly, so it is very important for you to be aware of this so you do not let any of it go to waste.

o The majority of fruit/veggie juices go down quite smoothly and do not foster the release of acids from your stomach. However, I caution you to use lemon, orange and tomato juice sparingly as they could, in some cases, cause uncomfortable acidity. Use them, but always mix them up with other types of produce.

o Raw aren’t always suitable when eaten jointly. Apples tend to be the exclusion.

o Working with Greens– you may want to juice all of your greens up front and leave harder types of veggies for last. The reason for this is that when you prepare greens last, they tend to create a thick sediment on the jug, which makes pouring it harder. I actually spilled an entire half-gallon of juice I had just extracted for that very same reason.

For example, I juice a few carrots or pears first, then I move on to spinach, parsley and watercress… then on to carrots, celery and/or squash. You may come up with your own favorite way of juicing; this is just my recommendation based on a lot of trial and error

o Melons should be juiced themselves. Making a meal out of melons is another option.

o Refrain from utilizing juices of the sweetened, commercial variety. That is just garbage and will only serve to perpetuate sugar cravings. Any food that is pasteurized loses its nutritional pep.

o Cucumbers are in the melon family and might not blend too well with other vegetables. You may have to get used to the taste in some mixtures, but do not let that inhibit you from trying out new combinations.

o Dilute all fruit juice 25 to 50% so as to minimize the amount of sugar that you will be ingesting. Drinking too much non-diluted fruit juice can end up strengthening hunger and cravings. So be very careful with fruit. Fruit has natural sugar, but it is sugar nonetheless. You don’t have to water it down too much; just use common sense. The juice can still be quite tasty.

o Vegetable juices need not be diluted.

Some Suggestions To Help You With Your Juice Fast:

o Take hot and cold showers or baths. While juice fasting, the body will be expelling a lot of toxins through the skin. So regular bathing will help rinse it out and keep the epidermis clean and thus avoid acne or other skin blemishes.

I actually use the bathtub as my own private fasting “recharging” station. I may be about to crack and break a fast prematurely, but once I sit in the bathtub and just let warm to hot water hit me, I seem to always get a second wind. Give it a shot. To be sure, your water bill will probably surge during this time. lol

o The pre-fasting diet ought to consist of eliminating all fat and refined sugar. Start to eat larger quantities of instead. This will begin the detox and help you later by reducing the intensity and length of hunger pangs and detox symptoms. Trust me; following this type of “pre-fast” cleansing diet will make the fast much more bearable and stack the deck in your favor.

o Avoid negative people. Do NOT feed into the hysteria if well-intentioned (but misinformed) relatives and friends caution you that “you will die if you don’t eat.” Gosh, I have no idea how many times I have heard that one.

Don’t get glued to the TV set and become immersed in news which can often be quite negative. Avoid horror or violent films. Spend more time in prayer, meditation and viewing/listening to inspirational material. This is very important because fasting is mostly a “mental” discipline. If you are being bombarded with negativity to and fro, your chances of reaching your goal could diminish.

o Get some exercise every day that you are fasting to oxygenate and assist the body in its fat burning, detox cleansing task. I am not saying to go out and run a marathon or put yourself through grueling aerobic and/or weight training routines. I am talking about low impact exercise (like walking or riding a bike) for at least half an hour. This will help you to lose weight faster, but it also will help to take your mind off of food and eating! :-)

o I know this one may sound a bit odd to some people, but I also recommend that you sit under the sun for fifteen minutes to a half-hour daily while juice fasting. Sunlight in small quantities can help energize you, as well as give you a light bronze that will make you look great. Just don’t overdo it.

o Make use of Enemas–A juice fast may not always induce the disposal of ALL toxins, especially that tough and stubborn fecal matter adhered to the walls of the colon. You will want to make sure that any such debris is expelled so that it does not continue to pollute your body. Several colon cleansing sessions will usually do the trick. To this end, check out our  detox blog for a huge variety of articles related to detox cleansing.

o Continue with your normal daily schedule of activities. However, you will need to reduce the intensity at which you normally do things. You will need to take it easy, move slower and give yourself plenty of time to get things done. When fasting, especially during the first nine to eleven days, doing even the most mundane daily tasks can often require a great deal of exertion and concentration.

o Avoid coffee, soft drinks, tobacco or anything more. I smoked two-to-three packs of Marlboro reds for nearly thirty years. I smoked my last one the morning of my first 40-day water fast. If you are a smoker, I encourage you to do the same. Now is as good a time as any to overcome this terrible addiction.

o Cut back on certain nutritional supplements and prescription drugs. If you are more than sixty years of age, it is recommended that you take a multivitamin once daily while fasting. Again, make sure that you discuss all of this with your doctor and ALWAYS follow his or her recommendations. Although fruit and veggie juice has a LOT of nutrients, elderly fasters should err in the side of caution and take the multi-vitamin.

o If you are hypoglycemic, it will be best if you have someone around to supervise your fast. Depending on how your body reacts, you may need to “slow-down” the fast by adding some sort of protein.

o If you wear dentures, do not remove then because sometimes the gums shrink while one is fasting and you may find yourself having to buy a new pair.

o Get as much rest as you can and sleep, sleep, sleep!

Some Final Recommendations: It is important for you to realize that while fasting, you will likely experience periods of intense fatigue, tiredness and mood swings. This is all normal. Remember that when we fast a huge number of toxins that were hiding in fat tissue are abruptly loosened into the bloodstream. This is what causes the detox symptoms, which – depending on your diet – may be quite severe. But, the good news is that they WILL pass!

As I said before, fasting is a time when we tap into the spirit in ways that we are not accustomed to. It is a time of physical, mental and spiritual healing. Take full advantage of it and remember the HUGE benefits that you will gain from walking through the discomfort and reaching your goal.

Calorie Restriction and the Raw Food Diet

Calorie Restriction Diet? OR, EAT To Be LEAN!

I have realized since starting to eat a raw food diet that there are two major camps in the raw food movement, the eat less camp and the eat enough camp.

The eat less camp believe that a will be better for your health in the long term, as the body does more cleansing and repair work when it is not busy with digestion, and they argue that the calorie model is highly inaccurate and not based on solid science.

The eat enough camp believe that you will struggle to be successful on a raw diet unless you ENSURE that you are eating enough calories, and say that even IF the calorie model is inaccurate, it is at least something to work with so that we can objectively measure our intake.

Dr Douglas Graham, author of The 80/10/10 Diet, does not recommend a . He recommends that you eat ENOUGH on a high carbohydrate low fat diet to fulfill your caloric needs and do vigorous exercise at the same time.

When you are new to raw, and making such a major life change, it is very difficult to be successful AND try to eat a calorie restriction diet at the same time.

The ones who try to do this are far more likely to eat cooked food, to binge on fatty food, to obsess about food, and to suffer through many cravings and become more and more disordered in their eating habits.

When I first started on this path I had come from the calorie restriction diet mindset (1200 ) and so at first I did NOT eat enough in terms of calories.

I was trying to follow a raw version of a standard calorie restriction diet. When I just ate as much as I pleased I had the niggling feeling that I was overeating.

The result was that I did have several returns to cooked foods, sometimes even eating cooked foods that I had stopped eating and hadn’t eaten for quite some time BEFORE I went raw, like highly processed vegan food! Did I lose weight? Heck no! I gained some!

A One-Way Street!

When you begin to eat a very clean diet your body becomes MORE sensitive, it becomes LESS forgiving. You suffer more when you go off your path than if you had never begun on your path in the first place. In that way it is a one way street. Sure you can turn around if you want but you’re going to run into some serious oncoming traffic.

When you eat an overly restrictive calorie restriction diet you’re far more likely to binge on fatty foods and/or unhealthy cooked foods and can then actually gain weight because of the excess of calories that any cooked food binge will result in.

Also, if your calories consumed are not enough to sustain your daily activity then you’re also not going to be inspired to exercise, and exercise combined with a high nutrient diet is the best way to reduce your body fat percentage.

Many of the folks who believe they should practice a calorie restriction diet on an ongoing basis do not do much exercise, and it is no surprise: when you don’t eat much, you don’t have energy to move much.

Put binges and disordered eating behind you for good!

When you eat enough calories from fruits and vegetables you DON’T have crazy cravings and disordered eating.

Just EAT!

When you are eating enough calories from fruits and vegetables it is very easy to be successful.

Every cell in the human body runs on glucose, if you cut your carbs, you increase your cravings. When you’re adequately carbed it is easy to forget about food, you’re free to focus on everything else in your life. You feel great.

Concerned that eating too much fruit will cause weight gain?

Eating too much of anything will cause weight gain. You should never have ‘too much’ of anything. You should eat enough, enough that you are satisfied and free of cravings, but not so much that you can’t move after your meal.

Of COURSE it’s possible to gain weight on a raw food diet. If it wasn’t, then all those folks who wanted to build up muscle would have to steer clear of the raw diet. And this is just not the case. You can easily gain muscle weight on a raw diet. All you have to do is strength train very hard, and your appetite will increase along with your growing muscles, which will naturally attract you to more food to fuel the bigger muscles.

If you consistently consume too many calories, you can also easily gain some fat. However, the good news is that there is no such thing as a long term 100% low fat raw vegan who is obese. There is just no such thing, no matter how much fruit they eat. This is because even if you had to overeat on fruit every single day of your life, you would NOT be able to get in enough calories to become obese. Fruits are extremely satiating, as well as not being calorie dense enough for this to happen.

It is certainly possible to carry a few extra pounds of fat, and not every raw foodist you meet is going to be in fitness model shape. It totally depends on your individual goals. If a super lean fitness model body is something that you want, and you have excess fat that is not budging, then counting calories is key so that you can get acquainted with what amounts you should be eating.

However, it is best to create the caloric deficit required to begin losing fat at a sensible rate, by vigorous daily exercise, rather than by restricting your intake to unhealthy levels.

Remember, it did not take a week to get your body into the shape it’s in, it won’t take a week to get out of it.

So whether it is succeeding on a raw food diet, or succeeding with weight loss, the advice is the same: eat enough food. Leave the fasting and the starving to the folks who like obsessing about food.

The Real Foods Diet

Eating should be a lifelong process of nourishing yourself. Strict dieting, fad diets such as the Atkins diet, drastic diets, rigid food monitoring, or addiction to sugar, caffeine and other stimulants can all weaken your metabolism and halt the rejuvenating and rebuilding process of your body, mind and spirit.

On these pages, you will learn how to get started on eating real, whole foods to gain health. This is not a weight loss diet per se, although many people do notice fewer cravings and weight loss. Your metabolism and level of health may call for a different type of diet, so please use this as a general guideline. This should not replace care and advice by a holistic practitioner.

Why Follow a Real Foods Diet?

When you eliminate processed foods, sugar, and other stimulants, you will start to become aware of what your body truly needs to thrive. Most people will need to reduce the amount of refined starchy foods they eat — this means cutting down on potatoes, rice, pasta, chips, muffins, bagels and bread. Other changes are ncreasing your intake of quality oils and eating more vegetables, especially non-starchy ones.

Why You Should Make Gradual Changes

Although it is tempting to want to overhaul your diet overnight, you will be overwhelmed if you do. Gradual changes are more effective and lasting.

How to Monitor Your Progress

What are signs that the changes you’ve made are right for you? You will notice improvement in one or more of these areas:

Increased energy
Weight regulation – lose excess weight or gain needed weight
Skin and hair are clear and soft
Bowel movements become more regular
Sleep quality improves
Improved digestion – less bloating, gas, and heartburn

If the changes you’ve made are too drastic or are not right for you, you will notice one or more of these symptoms:

Tiredness or fatigue
Feel like you’re obsessed with food, which takes time away from nurturing yourself and your relationships with others
Feel guilty or upset when you eat an ‘unhealthy’ food
You have to record what you eat everyday in order to stay on track
Dark circles under your eyes
Dry skin and hair
Weight gain, especially around the middle and/or arms and legs are getting thinner
Weight loss of more than 2 lbs per week

Step 1: Locate natural health foods in your area

Look in your community, the yellow pages, and on the internet. Local vegetarian organizations are great resources. You can often find out about local farmer’s markets, produce stands, food co-ops, , cooking classes, and grocers in your area.

If you don’t have access to natural or if organic produce is not in your budget, look for Japanese, Greek, Chinese, and Indian grocery stores for fresh fruits and vegetables, cooking oils, buckwheat noodles, brown rice, beans and other goodies.

Non-organic produce should be washed and scrubbed thoroughly and outer leaves of leafy vegetables should be discarded. To clean vegetables, you can use baking soda and/or vinegar and soak and scrub vegetables for 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 2: Get some cooking reference books

One of my favorite reference books is Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone by Deborah Madison. It provides information on storing, selecting, and cooking different vegetables, and tons of recipes for making soups, casseroles, vegetables dishes, desserts, soy dishes, pizzas and almost any other vegetable staple.

When evaluating cookbooks, look at the ease of preparation. Some cookbooks have great recipes but with an ingredient list and preparation method too difficult to do on a busy schedule.

Step 3: Try some healthy restaurants in your city

You will be able to see how good healthy cooking can taste. Visit local vegetarian restaurants for ideas on vegetable dishes, shakes, and salads with vegetable protein, Indian restaurants for ideas on bean dishes, and restaurants that serve free-range or organic meat.
